Very patronising cold welcome because we dared to enter without wearing masks (yes that maybe what Scottish Gov says but is totally ridiculous when everyone sat in cafe are shoulder to shoulder, no perspex dividers, same small airspace and all without masks on, plus folks are no doubt onto their third vaccination by now!). Service very slow and I suspect we had to wait ten minutes for the menus as a "telling off".

Passive aggressive/ just plain aggressive older Australian female waiter left a bitter taste in the mouth. Food is ok though. Helmis just a few doors down is far more welcoming.

Having gone across to Rothesay for our first 'big' day out in months we came across this cafe/restaurant which was one of the few places open for lunch. The menu was varied and we both chose to have filled ciabatta served with a side salad and coleslaw. I had the vegetarian option and it was delicious. The friendly and helpful staff were meticulous regarding Covid 19 regulations, and although most tables were occupied we felt pretty safe inside the tearoom.I certainly would recommend the Kettledrum if you are looking for lunch

Despite just being a cafe, The Kettledrum was the best dining experience we had on the island. The Fish & Chips was amazing - fresh, delicious and great value for money. The scones with jam were better than any we’ve had at 5-star hotels throughout the UK. They melt in your mouth and are to die for.The service is great and super friendly, but they get busy so book ahead. Can’t wait to return to Bute to try more dishes!
