Really loved this pub/eatery. A beautiful thatched pub with a large patio comfortably laid out for dining as well as indoor tables.Well decorated, with walls exhibiting local artists work for sale. Clean throughout and the village green across the driveway for additional seating and dining. A very small village so little traffic makes for the only extra noise 6 or so Peacocks strutting around. Service was excellent, lovely people. The menu is small but covers every base. Have the Prawns, so good. Sorry no photos, I'll have to go back.

Very very pretty location. Perfect if the weather is good. Didn't have food but i bet it would have been good. Not cheap tho.

I'm sorry but we were so disappointed with this pub, we had heard such good things about it but not the experience we had. The venue is nice, the service was good and the menu looked amazing, although very expensive for a pub. Cheapest steak £28, burger £18! I know it's near Oundle but still shockingly high prices. The food was nice, but not outstanding. The biggest disappointment was that £18 burger - it was a tiny patty, very dry, with a huge amount of cheese and couple of sad bits of lettuce. I don't mind paying that for a burger if it's been made with love, from the best quality ingredients, but sadly this one wasn't, it may as well have been a cash and carry burger.Another of us ordered a brunch baguette, costing £9.50. When served to him he was told they had run out of eggs.I would expect to be told that before being brought the baguette in case I wanted to change the order. For me, a brunch baguette is all about the egg - no additional amount of bacon/sausage etc would make the difference, the egg is pretty important!Hardly any desserts available either.Overall a poor experience at this pub. If prices were more reasonable it wouldn't have been so bad. I hate writing bad reviews, and it takes a lot for me to find time to write a review at all, but I really feel that people need to hear honest opinions that are bad as well as good.

Lovely Setting sitting outside on Easter Sunday. Food was amazing and staff couldn't have been friendlier.

Booked for Mothering Sunday . 4 adults and 3 young children. We were 35 minutes before they took our order but we managed to have drinks and 3 starters. After 2 hours we still hadn’t had our main course. So because our family had to travel ,we had to leaveTelephoned to complain and they were very sympathetic and offered us our £40 deposit back and a voucher, which I was pleased to accept. But after a week had not received either. So telephoned again as had given bank details and was told they had forgotten and would deal with the problem. But as to date I we have not heard anything.

Revisited after many years of being off our radar. Updated modern decor and very good food from menu and a specials board.Great background live guitar music.Service good and staff pleasant and friendly.

Lovely pub, friendly staff and dog friendly! Not overly expensive. There's plenty of outside space, which is nice.If you want a traditional British pub experience, drop in!

Had a large group for a farewell and was so happy we chose the Chequered skipper. The location is stunning, the service was great and the food very well done. Thanks Sophie and team for a memorable experience.

Good but should be better. The Chequered Skipper is a family run pub and restaurant in the village of Ashton. The setting is lovely but unfortunately the food didn’t match the atmosphere.I ordered a gluten free cheese burger; my wife ordered fish and chips with salad. Unfortunately when the food arrived my wife’s salad looked and tasted like it was made sometime yesterday or maybe the day before and my “gluten free” cheese burger was a cheese burger without the bun. I didn’t order a burger without the bun; I ordered a gluten free burger and they are not the same thing. It is 2021, not 1921 so there is no excuse for not having gluten free options on the menu. It’s not hard, all it takes is a packet of gluten free burger buns and a loaf of gluten free bread in the freezer then you thaw a slice or a bun when you need one.The setting is worth five stars, the soggy salad and bun-less burger reduced you to 2.5 stars but I’ll be kind and round it up to 3 stars. My advice: buy a packet of gluten free burger buns and a packet of gluten free bread for £1.50 from Asda. Keep them in your freezer and thaw a slice whenever you need one. It’s not hard.
