The Talbot Hotel Eatery & Coffee House in East Northamptonshire

Stopped for a light lunch. Somewhat uninspiring choices and having discovered that the chicken wasn't free range ordered the Smoked Cheddar and chive sandwich. To be frank it looked as if this was sandwich filler from tesco in some bread, a tiny portion of coleslaw and the 'dressed salad' was a few leaves and some sweet onion.Service was fine and the food was pleasant enough but wouldn't be back in a hurry.

This is a very beautiful historic hotel set in the market town of Oundle. Steeped in history, it was an old coaching inn, evidence of this is the narrow upper corridor with small windows and the narrow road which is the outside coffee seating area.The whole hotel has a unique atmosphere and oozes charm with many seating areas both inside and out. Beautiful rooms with unique toiletries which can be purchased to further accent your stay. Amazing tea coffee selections and Nespresso machine in the room.The breakfast was very tasty with a good menu choice which is served to you. There is a help yourself cold buffet selection also for cold drinks fruit, cereals, yogurt and jams.In the older original building are windows and a most impressive staircase, both believed to have come from Fotheringay Castle.Many a time can be spent reading the historical records on the walls regarding the demise of Mary Queen of Scots and searching for the imprint of her ring on the staircase.The staff take a great pride in the hotel and it's history and upon asking, we were shown the ring imprint, inscribed windows and the famous suite.So is it haunted......I had a sense of 'doom' wash over me when i stood on the landing near the staircase and oddly when I looked at a photo of where I had later stood and felt this, there were a series of sparkly lights near the doorway.If anyone loves historic buildings then this is definately a place to visit.There is a reasonable sized car park to the rear of the hotel but accessed past the hotel on the left and left then left down a dead end road, I believe called Drumming well lane which has ghost story attached to it.

Nice place. Nice food. Good service. Helpful staff.Limited menu and not the cheapest in Oundle, but very nice and worth the extra outlay.10% surcharge towards staff wages, tips etc. Why? In a place like The Talbot, management ought to be able to afford their staff a decent sum without making customers pay.You could ask for it to be removed, but it's a bit late by then, innit?Oh. Very good ambience.

We only had coffee but they give a small side order of maltesers, which puts them high on my list of places to visit. The hotel is clearly a wedding venue and the rooms look lovely. The whole hotel is very atmospheric as some of the stones from Fortheringhay Castle were used in its construction

Beautiful old building and decor. Sunday roast beef dinner was delicious, beef pink, full of flavour and melted in the mouth. Monday night ox cheek also delicious. Lovely puds too. Excellent full English . Lots of interesting small shops to explore. Visited family run plant nursery and Elton Hall garden centre and cafe. Good quality plants at both. Great 2 nights away birthday treat.

Stayed at the Talbot a number of times and have always been pleased but to be honest there were a couple of niggles this stay.On booking in the lady on reception was pleasant but not particularly helpful,the lady gave me my key and told me my room is 208 and that it is at the back of the garden and gestured toward the car park. No matter where I looked there was no signs to tell me where room was. I returned to reception to ask where this room could be. I was asked did I not find the archway into the garden. I replied I had but this looked like a private residence. The receptionist said no this is where your room is. A sign would have been helpful.On entering the room no welcome letter as I was told there would be.My wife and I had booked evening meal but when we arrived at the restaurant we were told that it was a reduced menu. Although we stayed to eat, the food was not to the normal standard.Having grumbled a little this would not stop us visiting again you can't always be 100% all of the time.

A very lovely hotel, service was excellent. We dined in the cosy bar area. I would have liked to have had more on my plate of the accompaniments to my cured salmon starter and the chunky chips with the main could have been crispier; on the whole though very satisfied. The breakfast was excellent. Would definitely stay here again.

Me and my friend rang to book a table and they told us a table would be available. When we arrived the restaurant was quiet and the table wasn’t even ready. We ordered drinks and food but the food came out before the drinks which we were waiting for.We had finished our food for a good 20 minutes and nobody came to clear the plates from the table or ask if everything was okay with the food or to say if we wanted the bill.Me and my friend had to go to reception desk to pay and they didn’t mention about a service tip but automatically charged it to the bill. And then after asked for a tip as well as.Not happy with the service and will not be returning.

Pub lunch in the bar. Nice staff. Burger was could have been more flavoursome utcwas good quality and was a bit pricy at £16. The other plate was homemade fish finger butty. Good quality fish and nicely cooked a better deal at £10. its a comfortable and well appointed place to go for lunch and a chat and being right in the middle of Oundle, easy to find. If you can't find a place to park on the street they have a car park out the back. Drive past the hotel up the hill take first left and then left again.

Welcoming staff and comfortable rooms. Food matched expectation.Restaurant service could be faster but was served attentively and when it came with mistakes (we had a complicated combination!) rectified quickly. A star taken off due to the bar shutting early at 2215 on a Saturday night. We were able to get a round in after this time thanks to the manager allowing this but still seems incredibly early for a hotel bar.I'll definitely return as all else was to satisfaction, so hope this can be reviewed.Thanks
