"Halfway between the historical market town of Newark and Grantham the home of Isaac Newton, The Wheatsheaf Inn overlooks Dry Doddington's St. James Church who's tower out leans the leaning tower of Pisa. With real ales a nice selection of wines and spirts, pub food classics, lovely log fire, beer garden and children's play area, plus we're dog friendly. Food is delicious, extremely good price for the amount/quality and the nicest beer and wine. Only managed to get pics half way through!

Really good white chocolate crème brûlée. Good service in a very old 14th century pub. Pork belly was very nice.

Definitely NOT reccommend! We visited at 7.30pm on the Saturday evening of a bank holiday weekend when you would expect the kitchen to be well stocked for a busy weekend; our party was 4 people.Having been directed by bar staff, we made our own way to find our reserved table in the dining area; the dining area was half full at that time. Two menus were already on the table, from which to make our choices. The selection on offer was on the light side, but for a small country pub, a reasonable selection of 'pub grub' classics.Unfortunately the server then appeared ... 'Sorry, but we only have one steak left and just two pork bellies, oh, and the (mushroom dish) is off as we are out of mushrooms.'A few moments later, the (embarrassed) server can back to tell us they were also out of salmon and chicken so out choices became somewhat limited. We chose 3 portions of 'warm breads with an olive oil and balsamic vinegar dip' to start. When eventually delivered after a long wait, most of the sliced ciabatta bread was no longer warm and the content of the dip pots was minimal / insufficient for the quantity of bread. While the balsamic vinegar was quite apparent, the olive oil was not (if indeed there was any at all). The wait for main course was long and inexplicable considering the hand full of diners remaining. The server appeared to advise that the 'chunky chips weren't available so they could only offer, 'skinny fries'; with no alternative, we agreed.Main course choices were 1 x pork belly, 2 x fish and chips and 1 x ham and eggs. They slowly emerged, 1 plate at a time but in fairness, the food was acceptably presented and warm, with reasonable size portions. The pork belly was 'okay' accompanied by a single potato, with under cooked (hard) Chantoney carrots and asparagus which was also under cooked. The ham, egg and chips was a reasonable meal with a large portion of ham and salad leaves, but unfortunately the meal (presumably the ham) was heavily salted causing me to have to drink copiously to clear the after taste. Our companions commented that the fish and chips were 'nice'.We followed up with 'sticky toffee pudding served with salted caramel ice cream'. Although not offered, one of our group requested custard and the kitchen kindly obliged.Again a long wait the server appeared ... 'We have no salted caramel ice cream.... Will vanilla be okay?'The puddings were delivered EXTREMELY hot. At a guess, they had been excessivelymicrowave heated, starting to caramelise and were falling apart. All in all, not a great dining experience but there were two saving graces:The young man serving us was polite, attentive and doing his best under difficult circumstances. We appropriately tipped to acknowledge his serviceSecondly, the total cost at £84 was fair for what was provided. In summary, this is NOT a venue where diners should expect a high quality dining experience.

Not a good experience not all items available off the menu. Even ran out of chunky chips on a Saturday night on bank holiday weekend. Sticky toffee pudding straight out of microwave red hot. Won,t be going again.

Used as a Britstop. Bartender had no idea this was a Britstop but we stayed anyhow. Car park was fenced off as undergoing building work, so we parked opposite the pub. Food was great, cosy pub with old beams, just as an Inn should be. Quiet corner of village, not far from A1, about 6 mins. Service was great, no negatives. All good, would recommend

Boxing Day walk, and drink at lunchtime, with family. Just great.

Great selection of beers in lovely village pub. Nice outdoor space

The food was inedible. The chips were undercooked and resembled boiled potatoes. The eggs had rock hard yolks and were black on the underside. We waited 45 minutes for this. Nice pint of Abbot though and wine good and cheap.

Excellent snack for lunchtime... perfect size not too enormous. Rather waspy outside so recommend indoors around fruit season. Booked for evening meal.
