Have visited and had two long lunches with friends in the past fortnight, once eating upstairs and yesterday downstairs. Both the food and service has been generally very good and consistent, I am sure I will return again soon. Stand out dishes have been the very indulgent toastie and fries and Jansonn's Delight. The omelette and smoked salmon, whilst simple, was excellently executed. I am a wheelchair user and some members of staff have gone out of their way to assist me - much appreciated.

The steak was so good I wanted to divorce my wife and marry it, and I really love my wife!

Exceptional quality and value for money for their set menu at lunchtime. Wonderful dining room and attentive staff. 'Jannsons Temptation' side dish was beyond temptation!

Went for drinks, not a meal. Lots of nice comfy settees and chairs so it feels cosy. Bar book of different cocktails, spirits, mocktails etc. Only complaint was that no windows appeared to be open, which I think is still necessary at the moment

Lovely friday night dinner with in-laws, had scrummy oysters and then mussells in a Thai sauce for my main course.I think one of the best dinner place in Colchester Town

Lovely decor and good location, but table service only and the bar staff REALLY take their time making cocktails - at the expense of anyone and everyone else waiting. 20 minutes after ordering, we were still waiting for 2 (non-cocktail) drinks - and unfortunately we had to leave without actually receiving them. (This was at about 7pm on a Friday night, so not as busy as it could have been.) Disappointing, and not really very encouraged to go back.

First time here last night. Nice decor, very welcoming and homely. The pork belly starter was incredible. Its a must! Then had a fish platter for two, which was really lovely. Great table service as well. Will definitely be back for more.

Utterly Flawless... Great Atmosphere, Great Food, Great ServiceThe Church Street Tavern is a small backstreet gastro-pub. Decorated with an eclectic assortment of living room furniture, it boasts one of the most uniquely intimate and friendly atmospheres I've encountered in a long time. Service is warm, welcoming, and attentive, without being intrusive, and the selection of drinks is above average. As for the food, the sirloin here is one of the finest steaks I've eaten outside the continental United States, and could easily hold its head high in any Texan steak house. Side dishes were prepared perfectly, and the entire ensemble was of frankly excellent quality.Full marks all round. I'll be coming back here soon.
