We went on Mothers' Day. The food was fine and the staff helpful but they seemed to forget we were there after the starters - we had to chase them for the main and ended up waiting over an hour. And this in spite of having pre-ordered. Something seemed to go wrong in the kitchen and it then took ages to sort it out.I got the impression we weren't the only ones who had a long wait.Food - pretty good.Service - pretty poor. Thanks to the waiter who sorted us out!

Lovely Mother's Day roast. Atmosphere relaxed, service excellent, canal side location beautiful. Limited parking but even on a busy day found a space nearby. More cauliflower cheese please.

Lovely setting, just by the canal and a vintage lock, a couple of minutes walk to the centre of Berkhamsted. This is quite a posh pub, where food and drink prices are usually high. I went there a couple of times when I moved in the area, back in the late nineties. At the time, it was "the" place to go, to be seen as well!I remember that once you've passed the bouncers, getting to the counter was another challenge. At the time, I swear it felt like half an hour before I could quench my enormous thirst. Let's half that, now I'm a grown-up; it is still a long time. Nowadays, you don't need to queue to order your round. There is a QR code on one of the corners of the table with some basic instructions. A quick scan away and you're on a cool website where you can quietly list your order. I mean, this is great and useful, although another human's job becomes a machine's task. Like at some petrol stations where you choose to pay inside or at the pump, you should be able to decide whether you want to be served by a cute waiter/waitress or to speak to acomputer/phone/pad/watch/dashboard/etc.But that would be taking the p***, wouldn't it? By the way, it took us a good 30 minutes before we could see the first drinks being served. This time I don't blame IT, it just didn't work for us that evening.Still, that kept us busy for a while, and the whole experience has been pretty good.Definitely recommended!

The location of this pub is great, very easy to get to and plenty of parking around the area. We ordered a table, but when we arrived they were a bit disorganised and we ended up with a pretty rubbish table near the door and without much space, we had taken our 2 year son with us too which made it more difficult. The food looked great on arrival, but it was very salty and despite mentioning this there was no response from the staff, so left quite disappointed in the overall experience. Could be better is the tag line.

Lovely place for lunch or dine in, or just for a drink and snack. Good food, very friendly and warm atmosphere.

The Boat is a unique little Pub based on a a picturesque little canal. Definitely not one for people not willing to wait for their food/drinks orders...Visiting my friends for a spot of lunch turned into a 3.5 hour game of trying to work out how it could possibly take so long to get us our food orders. What I will say is that when the food did arrive that it wasn't all too bad, however that might have been due to partial starvation... We would have ate a leather boot at that point 😅

Really nice and friendly staff with a decent bar area. Plenty of room inside and space between tables so don't have to squeeze past people sitting down. Set on a nice location, in the canal. With a nice seating area outside aswell. Only downside is parking COULD be a problem

Really disappointed with the service provided and overall experience. We had booked for dinner & drinks and on arrival asked to sit outside as it was a nice summer evening. The host, who had initially ignored us was hesitant and stated that it wasn’t possible (despite the restaurant being less busy than we’ve seen it).On seating us we had to order via QR code, and to be fair the drinks came pretty swiftly. However, having to order via the QR and sat in an empty restaurant with no input or attention from staff, we decided to have dinner elsewhere.Having had many good nights in the past, I know the tram at The Boat can do better.

Can't be beaten on a sunny day, gorgeous setting by the river, decent food, friendly service, one of my favourite spots in Berkhamstead. Book in advance to save disapointment

Beautiful setting beside the canal. Lovely flower naskeys around really adds to the scene. You have to enter wearing a mask to announce yourself at the bar and can sit out or inside. You scan the qr code on the table and order and pay for everything on the phone. The service was excellent. Young man served us very friendly and helpful. Food very tasty. The only negative point I can make is the toilets had a very strong odour of fish. Unsure why. But otherwise great place. Very reasonable price and good food. Recommend.
