St James Restaurant in Hertsmere

Had dinner here with friends last night. It was a most delicious meal, attentively served by superb staff. I was actually surprised by just how good the quality of food was, given that the overall price for the meal was reasonable. There are so very many restaurants to choose from these days, so it was great to have found this jewel amongst them. Highly recommended!

I was very excited to book this place and finally went last Saturday. The food was so tasty the fillet was amazing, perfect cooked. I’m definitely visiting again. Nice location.

We've eaten here a few times but I was disappointed with the vegetarian Valentine's options. There was little imagination in the fusilli which, although tasty, was vastly overpriced even with the half mushroom. The chickpea starter was tastier but hardly inspiring, but the desserts made up for it with a lovely share plate for 2 ♥️

Honoured our postponed 2021 Christmas booking and deposit in Feb 2022. Attentive and good humoured service for table of 8. Delicious wine and food enjoyed by all. Special thanks to Alphonso who helped with our delayed booking. Also again to Alphonso and Harris and all who took care of us all evening. A highly anticipated evening and not disappointed. Went for Afternoon & Cream tea @ Betsys tearoom inside St James. Very enjoyable, tasty sandwiches, scones & cakes.Plenty of Tea. Attentive, assertive service & friendly patron. Very pleasant ambience & decor.

We visited St James on Xmas Eve expecting the same high quality, beautifully presented food from the best restaurant in Bushey that we have had in the past. Unfortunately, it felt like the chef had taken the day off - I ordered chicken supreme, which should have been a classic chicken dish with white wine, cream and shallots, beautifully presented with accompanying vegetables. Unfortunately this was not the case. I was served what appeared to be a quarter chicken, drizzled with some sort of brown sauce or gravy; a potato croquette that was almost as big as the chicken and a tiny portion of, I assume, boiled cabbage. Really disappointing.

Honestly don't understand how this restaurant is rated so highly on Google and tripadvisor, its a far cry from fine dining. On entering, the dining area was cold and there was an odd stale smell in the air. Service was excellent but the food was hit and miss, the lamb and arancini were lovely and thats about it. The onion soup was bland and without cheese, apple tart had been microwaved, and some bits of the meal like the onion soup crouton and fondant potato had the same funny stale smell and taste that the room did. We were also served a glass of white with bits of cork floating around in it. Overall disappointed and will not be returning, Zaza next door is much better value.

Well good place, will return again because we like the ambience. But our breakfast experience wasn’t the best. I think they are still fumbling to get back to work :-) and may not have the best crew to get there. We ordered a smoked salmon avocado mash bagel and first they sent a salmon avocado in a toast, then when we asked for it to be a bagel, they just scraped things into bagel and sent, not toasted and not buttered. We had to ask for additional avocado and made our own toast then 😂😂 .. anyways, taking it in good spirit and hope they get their groove back soon.P.s. st James team .. can you please keep an option of medium roast coffee also .. thanks.

We managed to get a table booked last week for our anniversary, rang up the day before and was lucky enough to get a table. The staff are very professional and friendly! The food and the red wine are exquisite (the lamb was delicious) Nothing to fault whatsoever. Very clean also.

Good food with good wine list. Owner came over to introduce himself too, so nice touch. Setting was good and attentive service. Portions are appropriate size making an easy decision for three courses. House champagne was good and not too costly. It does get busy.
