Dining at the Royal Hotel in North Norfolk

Four of us went out a few days ago for an evening meal at the Royal, two of the group are very good friends of mine and were staying at the hotel. The front of house staff are all lovely and very friendly, the meals however proved to be a different and very disappointing case. One meal of a spit roast chicken for my partner was warm on the outside but stone cold on the inside, something my partner was not expecting, I also tried some of the chicken and can confirm it was cold with a hint of ice crystals in the centre. It was also served with an over zealous amount of BBQ sauce that completely swamped the cold chicken . We didn’t make a huge fuss, choosing just to call over a young waiter who apologised and took the meal away. It was replaced by a ‘new’ chicken, still awash with an enormous amount of sauce some ten minutes later, sadly it too was once again cold in the centre, my partner had now lost her appetite and was way behind the other three.Unfortunately it doesn’t end there, I ordered an alleged twice cooked pork belly dish with chunky pork, a soi sauce dressing and stir fry vegetables. In hindsight I should have sent the whole meal back as it was most unappetising, small chunks of belly pork, swimming , yes swimming in a soi sauce of some sort, hidden under a mountain of I believe, stir fry vegetables. Sadly things did not improve with this dish, the pork was SO tough and chewy it almost made your jaws ache, you certainly wanted a good strong pair of teethe . Either it was a very unhappy pig when it was slaughtered or it had been cooked at such a rate it proved tough and leathery to eat. I also gave up and upon reflection had almost as much left on my plate as when I started . Now to my friend, he ordered a dish of pork medallions with a selection of fresh veg, a usually tasty treat.When it arrived it was basically strips of ordinary pork, nestling in a mushroom sauce, it look good enough to eat !! But medallions it most certainly was not as these are normally the finest ,tastiest, smallest roundels of delicious pork you could present on a plate as a meal. There was even an unpleasant amount of gristle attached to one piece of the alleged medallion, something this ex butcher was not expecting to see on his plate.He did consume most of his meal, mine sat in front of me and my partner had nothing, having sent the second attempt back.The fourth member of the group just ate his as I think he would be prepared to eat almost anything. Three of us did order three different sweets, these proved to be a success.We won’t be eating there again, I live locally and will go elsewhere for a treat out, which is what it was and we were all looking forward to a pleasant evening. Ok, the final bill did not include the two attempts at the chicken or indeed the sweet my partner consumed . Very good decision by whoever but money was not an issue here, just a shame that the chef was unable to produce the goods he is paid to do.Did it spoil the evening, yes most certainly it did, just thought I would share the experience with you.Richard

Bookef in for a Wednesday night carvery. Yorkshire puddings were like rubber. I know what a carvery is but usually most places offer a veggie alternative. There was none although the staff did point out the many vegetables they were pouring boiling water over, presumably to keep warm. Sorry was not imprrssed.

From the moment we arrived to the moment we left all I can say is our stay was wonderful. We had a very friendly welcome, in fact all the staff were so courteous & welcoming. The room was a very good size, as was the bathroom. There was a constant supply of piping hot water at high pressure, the evening meals were amazing. Our first night was a carvery which was delicious & plentiful which probably sums up our other meals too, I can highly recommend the seafood salad which was so good we had it twice. The breakfast is mainly buffet style which means you can have exactly what you want, the cooked breakfast part was delicious & hot plus the bread on offer made great toast. The restaurant & bar had a great ambience of an evening & the outside seating area was truly delightful, helped by the fact we had great weather whilst we stayed. All in all a great place with great food and friendly, helpful staff, for us it couldn’t have been any better. This is truly the best 3 Star hotel I have ever stayed at.

Lovely staff I can't fault the customer service. We went on a Sunday for the carvery the table wasn't big enough for us all it was okay but a bit crampt. Now down to business the food.... Sorry but it was terrible most definitely not worth the £11.95 per head. Meat was dry, veg was swimming in water and over cooked and you needed a diamond blade to cut through my daughters roast potatoes. I won't be eating their again.

The hotel is ok. When I got in the room, there was a not-functioning tv remote with buttons not working properly, a cracked toilet seat, and kettle with no filter leaving a mess in it. Also, bad attitude from a member of staff-Emma who works in the restaurant with dark hair. The breakfast isn’t good here- extremely basic, the hours are wrong it shouldn’t be 8-9:30AM but that’s all it goes on until which is the worst hotel breakfast hours I’ve ever experienced. One last thing is the fact there’s not a lift we had to walk miles away to our room with heavy bags of luggage, which is very bad for senior people and people with needs.
