Gatehouse in Norwich

I go there for a fortnightly music evening.

A relic of traditional boozers. Ale straight from the cask. A landlord with a friendly welcome. There's no bells or whistles with this place, why need there be? It's a pub in a listed building oozing with character, it has live music weekly and it is a blast from the past with prices. It's not like walking into a Wetherspoons, withhold your expectations. Support your locals folks!

Nice, friendly environment. Ale prices seem very reasonable. I came in here for the first time when a musician and singer were playing and I worryingly thought I crashed a private party for a moment!

There's a lovely garden at back, with some picnic tables on the river bank. Decent beers at a very reasonable price.

Lovely old pub with a lovely old landlord. Not to many pubs like these about anymore. Love sitting in the beer garden along the river on a hot day with a cold pint of guiness. Just wish it would be a bit more child friendly. Saying that I don't like to see adults getting pissed with their children about,but nothing wrong with just a couple while the children enjoy a cold coke running about letting off steam.

pop in every so often after work, decent place to have a quick pint but not as atmospheric as other places (Due to location) the drinks are to a good standard and the abbot ale has a beautiful aftertaste here, beer garden is astounding with a small jetty beside the river at the end, perfect for the summer months.

Old traditional pub as they use to be as they say. The main bar has nice ales, Grain Oak (at 2.40 a pint!!!), Greene King IPA, Greene King Abbot, Woodforde's Wherry, and Samuel Smith's Old Brewery Bitter, this is a Yorkshire Bitter and very popular and established in 1758 (2.50 a pint!) All these are the cheapest I have seen in Norwich. They also have different varieties of beer's, draught as well has bottled. Also this pub has an occasional guest ale as well. Nice oak bar!The interior is very comfortable, nice carpet and comfortable seating, nice open coal fire, seating out side and a very large garden backing onto the river Wensum.This pub also has music Folk Music on a Wednesday and Thursday, Celtic Folk on a Sunday. On a Saturday they have 1950s onwards music. Great place for any every one and cheap prices so I recommend students go to this bar they would be VERY welcome. The owner/barman is a jolly chap, and mentions "wonderful" when serving his local ales and beers.The Gate House also has a darts team on a Monday, pool teams on Thursday, and a Crib team. Plenty of car parking space so no need to worry about that. Open from 12 pm onwards. Wonderful atmosphere go and give it a try, it's one of the best places in the City!!

The Gate House is the sort of roadside pub you could drive past with hardly a second glance but that would be a big mistake. What a great pub this is. Just full of character and characters. There's always a really good selection of local beers and John the landlord really knows how to look after the beers and his customers. The live, unamplified music on various nights is a joy even if your not particularly into folk music. It's nearly all instrumental and certainly sets your feet tapping. Its full on if you sit nearby or just provides a great ambience if you want to sit and chat in the main bar. The Sunday night Celtic session attracts musicians from far and wide and it's different every week. It's always lively, to a very high standard and a country mile better than anything else you'll find anywhere in East Anglia - In my humble opinion.
