Probably the most traditional ‘boozer’ in St Albans, as can be seen from the photographs. I haven’t had to go outside to the toilets in a pub in many a year! The clientele is primarily locals, although the atmosphere is welcoming. Three/four well-kept ales on draught; had a good pint of Timothy Taylor Landlord. Branded as McMullen, although I didn’t see any of their ales.Definitely worth supporting ‘proper’ pubs such as this one.

·

Fantastic pint of Timmy Taylor's, great pub atmosphere. Good for watching rugby.

·

Good beer and friendly environment.

·

Very rare old fashioned pub still with outside toilets, like walking through a time wharp plenty of character. Quality real ales good prices

·

THIS is a pub! Good beer, friendly locals, perfect back street boozer

I can't believe you guys are still there! Happy that you are! I used to work up the street at a company called Boston Trust and Savings about 30 years ago. The Landlord was named George, and he was a great bloke, but a little rough around the edges. He had a fun lunch ordering system that confused everyone that had never been there before and got annoyed if they didn't understand it. Loved George, the food and the McMullens beer. So happy this place is still going strong!

·

Good unspolit real ale focused town pub, notable as the place where the first ever CAMRA branch meeting was held.

·

Just how a local pub should be, run by very friendly and decent community people. Very well cared for real ales and great home cooked food.Superb!

·

It’s a bit of a local bar, they don’t accept debit cards but they do have a good selection of beer.

·

Perhaps it doesn't distinguish itself from the many great pubs in St Albans, but this is a pleasant place to spend an evening. Good beer and ambience make it a fine drinkers' pub.Arguably it was where CAMRA was founded, over a few ales of course. Worth a stop off on any pub crawl for that reason alone!
