The Gate in St Albans

Excellent, the Gate has opened up since the last time I was there a few years ago. I had a very nice breakfast even though it took a while to come. Drinks were good too, but it would be nice if they had a few other real ales on tap. I will definitely be visiting again.

I work freelance and this our much-look-forward-to Friday lunchtime treat. Over the years I've worked in many locations and lunched in many pubs, but The Gate gets it so right!!We put our food order in and it's ready for us precisely as we walk in. Our orders are correct and the food is hot, they make it look easy.It goes without saying that the food is very good, they have a lovely garden for sunny days and the staff are both friendly and efficient.The Gate deserves more than 5Stars in my opinion!

I had a brilliant time at this pub. Only popped in for a quick drink with a friend and ended up staying the whole night. Excellent food and service with friendly and welcoming staff. Will definitely be going back and would recommend to others.

A fantastic experience at the Gate . It was a brilliant day. Our very dear Auntie had her wake in the marquee at the bottom of the very pleasant garden . The food was amazing. The service was outstanding and the staff were exceptionally helpful( Especially a young man called Matt) Very many thanks , for making a difficult day much more bearable.Highly recommend this venue for all manner of celebrations.Mrs Ruth Palmer Cooper.

Spent a very pleasant 3 hours in the gate enjoying a very nice brunch.The service and food were excellent ans we were looked after very well by Evan.The refurbishment of the pub has been completed tastefully and has certainly given the local area a very nice pub.Well done Ben and your team!

Front of house and staff were on form and a really friendly and accommodating manager. Brilliant reception. Great staff meet greet and table service. And food is good.Massive downfall is the friendly dog policy. To watch two dogs attack each other while we tried to eat was off putting if not dangerous. Even to allow dogs to walk through the dining area was extremely off putting and unhygienic.Fair enough there is a market of dog lovers and you try to accommodate for all. But it would be lovely to have animal free dining area. So it's a shame to say we won't be returning.

Just returned from our regular Friday lunch visit and so impressed with the new renovations. Lovely new bar area and tasteful interiors, making great use of the space with comfy seating areas and new tables and chairs. Great welcome as always from Ben and the team, providing friendly and excellent service.

Really great little pub. Went for lunch with a friend, food was tasty, we both had the chicken burger. Staff were lovely and friendly. Would happily recommend.

Perfect spot of good food and serviceWe had a great meal catching up with friends. I was stuck for what to drink and the manager suggested the blackberry gin and Mediterranean tonic and it was so fabulous. The starters are so tasty and the wood fired pizza the best I have had in ages. I look forward to the next time we are able to return for more excellent service and top quality food.

My parents were looking for a low-key, semi private venue for a small wedding reception during lockdown (Sept 21). We met with Ben who instantly knew exactly what we envisioned and more! As restrictions lifted the numbers grew however Ben and the team were always happy to accommodate.We hired a marquee (on Ben's recommendation) in their private garden with beautiful tables and chairs, outside seating was also available which was ideal as the weather allowed us to make the most of the whole space.The BBQ food served to our guests was delicious, everyone commented how good the food was for "a pub", the choice was excellent and the extremely friendly staff went above and beyond.The wedding ran smoothly, the venue set up was perfect and we're so happy to have celebrated at The Gate - Thank you so much Ben, Evan and the team!HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
