The Speckled Hen in St Albans

A typical casual English pub. A small section for you to dine with your dog. Order at the bar. Staff were lovely and friendly. With my siblings, it felt laid back. I had a lamb shank roast at noon on a Sunday, it was okay. Many menus were unclean and sticky. Other diners were super casual and seemed like locals. Football was showing on TV in the background. Adequate parking.

Had dinner with a group of friends. We ordered so much food and it all came out cooked to perfection, the small tweaks we made were absolutely no problem for the kitchen. We even had a table check from Wayne the manager which was a really nice touch and the staff convinced us that desserts go to a separate stomach and they were well worth sampling!!I will be back soon to try out more of the menu!!

1st time at this pub, found the staff and food excellent. Very friendly and helpful from the moment we went in.

Incredibly condescending manager. Told us that our valid student ID was not valid for the student discount advertised in the pub. When we inquired why the discount didn’t apply to us he replied ‘I’m running a business, not a charity’.I’ve never felt so patronised.It’s a shame because the other supervisor working behind the bar was a very nice guy.

Terrible service. Visited at 6pm on a Thursday night before Christmas with my three year old daughter. I asked if it was OK to sit at a table that was reserved from 8pm as we wouldn't take long but I was told no as they could turn up at any time.We then sat at a table with no reserved sign and someone came straight over and said the table was reserved from 7pm. We asked if there were any free tables and the girl said there was only one free table as she walked away without telling is where it was.We left as I've never felt so unwelcome in a pub, maybe they are not a fan of kids.

A big thank you to Wayne and the Team at the 'Speckled Hen' for making our early Christmas Party such an enjoyable event for all 24 of us. The Christmas Menu was great, all our guests enjoyed the venue, food, obliging friendly staff and overall a successful event. See you again in the New Year!

Great food and reasonable too. Greg is always polite and so are the girls serving.Really enjoy the food, although the only problem when they get busy is that it takes quite a while for the food to come out.Other than those times, very happy and would recommend

Reasonable value for money for the Sunday lunch, 2 main courses for 1 if you buy a starter. We had the beef (so overdone) and turkey (too salty), so all in all was just about okay and the price paid was fair enough. The meat was kind of canteen quality, in fact the beef reminded me of school. I wouldn't have been happy paying any more but I enjoyed the reminiscence! The veg was really good though. Service was very good with friendly staff and the food arrived quickly. Wouldn't rush back but wouldn't avoid either!

Can't believe this pub aka Bunch of Cherries has sunk so low with collapsed ceilings bodged with plastic sheets. Needs a new management team urgently. Greene Kings new owners need to act but I fear they will sell it for housing development! ?
