Having dined at 20 or so Michelin-starred restaurants over the years, at Pea Porridge we had an nice meal but weren't blown away like you'd expect from this level of cuisine. In our experience there are other places to dine around Bury St Eds that we'd rank above Pea Porridge. That said, hopefully it was just an off-night and because we're local we'll probably go back sometime.

Very bland mediocre Mediterranean food. You can find better lamb steaks in a pub. You can find same quality kofters in a random Turkish restaurant. You want something different and tasty, but can't afford travelling to Turkey, Greece, Italy or Spain? Get yourself an Ottolenghi cookbook, follow it by the letter and you will get fabulous meals for 1/8 of the price! I am shocked it has a Michelin star!?!

I don’t want to write this review - which is why I’ve delayed in doing so. I love the story and the ethos about this place and I’ve wanted to go for years. When I found they’d been awarded a Michelin star I was gutted I hadn’t gone sooner! So in November my wife and I took my 13 year old son for lunch for his birthday for his first ever Michelin star experience (he loves Masterchef and eats _everything_). SO disappointed :-( Of precious Michelin starred restaurants I’ve eaten at have all a) served food that I couldn’t imagine being able to cook at home, and b) I’ve loved everything I’ve eaten (even with ingredients that I wouldn’t usually choose) and consequently I’ve never left a mouthful uneaten. Neither was true here.Gelatinous “Crispy” pigs ears followed by chewy quail followed by a few slices of ox heart served with one braised shallot, a bone we couldn’t get the marrow out of and some floury potato wedges with a dusting of paprika :-(. I don’t mind the fact there’s nothing fancy about the food but when it doesn’t taste great either...Had such high hopes but bitterly disappointed. Sorry Pea Porridge but we won’t be back.

This was an amazing restaurant that lived up to its Michelin Star reputation. Very special birthday meal with amazing service. Will definitely visit again.

A lovely, cosy restaurant. The staff are friendly and happy to answer questions about the menu and offer advice on wine pairings. The food is superb, top notch ingredients and the chef lets them speak for themselves. Rustic, but refined in style with bold punchy flavours, we loved every bite of our meal here.Highly recommended this place, we're looking forward to going back soon.

Suffolk’s only Michelin starred restaurant… we had to try it. We were not disappointed. Beautiful flavours and amazingly cooked meat and breads. The service was so friendly and chatty too. We had a great time. 100% recommended.

For wheelchair users: When we visited (Sep 2021) they had a ramp, but it is unsafe to use. I have notified the restaurant, but if you intend to visit there I recommend calling in advance and seeing if they have managed to replace their ramp yet before booking - I'm sure their staff will be happy to help! You need to add a note on bookings for a specific table anyway for wheelchairs. We used our own ramps, somewhat marred the experience - otherwise would have been 5 stars!Once IN the restaurant though, food was excellent! We had a brilliant time - everything beautifully and unfussily presented, very generous portions (we definitely ordered too much) and absolutely delicious! A few dishes slightly salty to my taste, but this was more the dish design itself than the cooking. A great place for a special occasion, but the set lunch menu (which some of our table ordered) was great value too.Would love to visit again!

First off, reservations required. Delicious food and excellent service, bit drab inside and out but everything else makes up for it. For having a Michelin star, it's very affordable. Local brew, huge wine list and ever changing menu! Flank steak was perfect as was the Ray. We will be back.

My family live in Bury. They booked the family dinner there as this is the first michelin starred restaurant in Suffolk. They were super excited as this would be their first michelin starred restaurant experience. We left about 1 hour later with our plates half full. I gave one star as Pea Porridge is the worst michel starred restaurant I have been. The service and the food is not even at the level you would expect from a pub with table service.1. ServiceMy mum was asked to move seat as she sat too close to another table (i don't understand why there are six chairs for a table for five in the first place). She moved the cutlery herself whilst the kind waitrose watching her to do it.The waitress did introduce the specialties of the day but offered zero explaination of the menu itself. If you are not familiar with north african food, google does a better job.My mum and my partner ordered a goat shank. It is a main course for two. The big plate placed at the corner of table very conveniently so that the mum can cut the meat and distribute the food just like she would do at home. In any restaurant with 12.5% service charge, i would execpt at least one waitress come over and offer help. In a michelin starred restaurant, i thought the waitress would servce the dish properly and cut it for you at least.2. foodstarter:we ordered fish soup, sweetbreads, spider crabs and pigs head. You can find all of them (perhaps not the sweetbreads) convinently in waitrose, no need to worry about the presentation as you can see from the picture, zero effort.main:we ordered quail, turbo fillet, kid goat shank. I love lamb shank but the kid goat shank was very gamy. It did not taste like a kid goat either.turbo fillet - it was fine, eatable comparing to the kid goat shank.Quail - i didn't try it but apprently the family think it was the bestdessert:we decided to not have any dessert to avoid any further disappoinment.3. wine menu:An A4 double printed, the selection of wines does not require a sommelier.4. other:Five of us only had three menus. when we asked to have two more, the waitress explained that due to hygiene reason, they had to dispose the menu after each use so we have to share the menu. Another example of poor service. Appreciate the hygiene concern, but not so environment friendly. it does not offer a good dinning experience either.i have been to many michelin starred restaurants from Heston Blumenthal to Kau Kee. I know every resaurant is different and I don't expect all michelin starred restaurants offer the same service. But I struggled to understand why Peo Porridge is michelin starred.avoid Pea Porridge if you would like to have a fine dining experience (tasting menu, artsy presentation, passionate staff talking about special ingredients and wine pairing). I would not recommend it if you want have an erotic family dinner unless you are a fan of gamy shank or gland.

Wow this is our go to place! Discreet and sublime, the lobster was perfectly cooked, everything on the menu is moorishly mouthwatering it’s so hard to decide what to have. Jurga is just brilliant as front of house so welcoming and personable. The menu is sourced locally as possible or sourced from the highest and finest quality possible. If you are passionate about quality, attention to detail and fine wines then this is for you. Highly recommended booking is essential. Feeling very lucky to have this restaurant nearby!
