The Duke's Head in Uttlesford

Found this little gem of a place and was immediately felt welcome. Cosy pub with good atmosphere. Stayed for lunch after reading other reviews and although I had not pre booked was fitted in. Although there was a wait for the food it was well worth the wait as it is freshly cooked, and very flavourful, and hot. Certainly not massed produced and served up to order as I have experienced in other establishments. And the portion sizes were more than ample, even with my large appetite, almost leaving me unsure as to whether i could tackle a desert as well, but on the advice of another reviewer I sercumbed to ordering the apple crumble, and I was glad I had. Pleasant staff always willing to help and asking if everything was OK without being over intrusive. I would without doubt visit again even though its in excess of an hour drive from my home. The chef who works here unseen deserves a mention for the attention to detail like the subtle Basil taste from Roast potatoes, and freshly cooked veg. Will most certainly look forward to returning.

Good food and table service. But the food was very slow to arrive. More people in the kitchen is needed. The. Pub was cold. Many customers kept their coats on! Try the apple crumble. It's delicious.

Nice welcome, good menu choices including plant based food. Food was good.

Food was good gastro pub food and our doggy was able to be with us which was nice.

A welcome haven for lunch after a 5 mile walk from Takeley on a lovely sunny spring day. The garden was perfect for our restful lunch break before getting the bus back home. Very good service and good food. We'll be back!

What a shame I cannot leave a positive feedback. We booked a table on Sunday for 1:30pm and drove 50 miles, were super exited to have some lunch. This pub was half full and when we asked young lady to take our food order she said she can't as they are too busy. After another 15 mins the other lady came to take our order and said that the waiting time is around 40mins. It actually took over an hour as we were told that the chef is ''on his own''. It wasn't great as we were with two toddlers. Long story short my husband found a hair in his plate and the same happened to me. When I saw the chef he had quite long hair and wasn't wearing a mob cap. Extremely disappointed and gutted about the food and the service.

Awful!!!!! A very unfriendly Manager/owner rolling her eyes when ordering from a very limited menu. Total chaos as nobody seemed to know what they were doing. We were not allowed to order our food when asked as they were too busy. It took 2hrs for our food to arrive once we placed our order. We were told 40 mins Our friends both had a long hair in the food, one wrapped around a carrot. She gagged pulling it out of her throat and choked! I could not make this s@#t up! My wife was put off her tough, undercooked, bland Partridge so it was only me that actually ate any food. Which was very average. Tough sirloin of beef and a crunchy star anise in the sauce. The chef needs to go back to culinary school and re-visit food hygiene and staff need to improve on manners and table service. Terrible experience. Greedy trying to cram so many people into a venue where they clearly are out of their depth! Such a shame.

Absolutely Amazing, this Pub was everything I was hoping and a few things I forgot to ask for! I popped in for Sunday lunch and despite a busy service they were able to squeeze me in. The food was incredibly well cooked and the portion was very generous not that is stopped me from struggling through a delightful desert all for a very reasonable price. The owner is fantastic and while slightly slow, service was personal yet professional.

No great hopes when we pulled in, it looks lovely but I've had some severely overcooked Sunday roast beef lunches in pubs. We were pleasantly surprised - we rang first to see if you need to book, and we were told you do, but they could squeeze us in.When we got there we were warned they were running slow due to the weight of work that day, which we accepted - good service saying that up front.We ordered a main course with no starter, it took a while but the drinks service was good with some nice conversation, 👌 very good service.When the food arrived it was a massive portion, lots of lovely rare beef, a big Yorkshire pud, cracking roast potatoes, with lovely vegetables - swede, kale, beans, peas, red cabbage. The last was a bit odd, but it made a nice change. It came with gravy, we asked if there was more and a boat of gravy duly arrived.A wonderful roast, really nice. We ordered one dessert and shared it, we couldn't finish that we were so full.The bill for two came to £67 for two huge mains, one dessert, 2 large and 1 small wine (**very** good Malbec by the way) and a pint.The pub is very dog friendly, and the staff treat humans and dogs very well, with dog treats on offer for well behaved dogs.This is not the place to go if you're in a hurry, at least not when we were there, but it's a super relaxing 2 hr lunch spot in really friendly surroundings.Highly recommended.
