Food taste amazing and for great value. Came here twice during our stay in Edinburgh!

One of my favourite places to eat in Edinburgh. Bentoya has recently had a refit of their interiors — going from shabby to rather chic(!) with wooden dividers reminiscent of a true Japanese restaurant experience. The food is some of the best sushi I’ve had in London or Edinburgh with beautifully fresh fish and a generous selection of other options including vegetable tempura, Katsu curry, and other noodle dishes.Staff are efficient and welcoming, and I’ve never had a bad meal here. I highly recommend Bentoya to anyone wanting a speedy meal or who simply loves Japanese food.

I went for dinner this evening and ordered the vegan version of the crazy Vege ramen. There was a miscommunication somewhere in ordering and my dish ended up arriving as the vegetarian version - a soft boiled egg in the bowl. However, the staff were very apologetic and offered to get me a brand new bowl without egg so I could have an entirely vegan meal. I thought this was very considerate as I have been treated poorly by other establishments in the past when they have served me actual meat even after I told them that I did not eat meat. So, even though there was that miscommunication that resulted in the vegetarian version arriving at my table - the service and offers to make it right was excellent that I sincerely rate Bentoya five stars. Accidents happen, but what was really exceptional was the way in which the staff handled the mistake after the fact. I hope that the two servers (I forgot to ask for their names, sorry!) are recognised for their wonderful work. I don't often come to Edinburgh, but I will be sure to come back to Bentoya when I do come back again.I haven't even gotten onto how the food was yet! It was excellent! I had the spicy tofu on the side too. 10/10 recommend. I cleaned my bowls clean!

Giving 3 stars because even though they have very tasty sushi and tempura, the ramen is just unacceptable at every level from noodles that overcooked and horrible to tasteless broth. The problem is that it is better to do few dishes well instead of many mediocre. The other reason why I give 3 stars is because I have ordered for delively twice and I dined once and every time I have food from there the next day my stomach is at a bad state. I am not sure if it is an ingredient that doesn't agree with me or something else but it is very sad that happens.

Went here yesterday as a treat whilst in Edinburgh. I have allergies and made the girl aware, told her what i could have on the sushi, she told me to go for the mixed platter and she could change what i couldnt have. Her english and understanding was very poor. Then i get a plate of 6 peices if sushi brought, im confused she told me to order the mix instead but brought me both. The mix sushi, appears with everything on i cant have. I called her to table to make her aware, but suddenly couldnt understand any english. Tried to say didnt have what i cant have on it, but it definitely did. I left the lot. No offer of changing it to correct order, no soy sauce on table either had to chase for some. Ended up giving the whole mix sushi to the next table to eat, as was sure by then i was going to be charged for it. Came to pay, said i was not happy with my experience and she did not understand english or allergies, all they offered was 10% discount! Most expensive waste of money ever. Defo will not recommend this place and if you have allergies take care!

Delicious! Great atmosphere and the music in the background is in japanese, it's really cool

Stopped by on a rainy and cold night to collect a warm miso soup and a prawn bento box. Delicious and very quick! Too bad for all that plastic and styrofoam…any way I could come with my own bento box next time?

Excellent authentic Japanese restaurant.I used to live in Japan so I’m quite picky with my Japanese restaurants and this one is extremely good for the price. They even had things like shochu, plum wine and toro (fatty tuna) which can be hard to find.A previous review said that the food was like you’d find in a bad Chinese restaurant?! The chefs are in fact Japanese and some of the wait staff too, so no idea what they’re talking about! Everything we had was very good.Would definitely recommend if you’re looking for something close to an authentic izakaya experience in Edinburgh.

Lovely food, reasonably priced! Will definitely be coming back. Highly recommended, good vegi opinions also available.

This place is an insult to sushi. Look at the photos for yourself, and thank your lucky stars you can’t smell the fish that’s clearly not fresh. Sadly the food went to waste as it seemed unsafe to eat and definitely not tasty. Do yourself a favour and don’t order from here.
