We have tried a couple of restaurant in and around Edinburgh, my boyfriend and I enjoy trying new restaurants and were really looking forward to trying this Mongolian restaurant.Upon arrival, we were greeted by a very helpful staff member, she confirmed our booking and showed us to table very quickly.Once sat at the table, we were given a quick overview to how the barbecue worked (Khublai Khan employ an unusual system) and soon after, we ordered our starters and had the system explain to us again. We chose the open buffet option which allowed us unlimited refills, the only way to create multiple bowls of food. With reference to quality, the food was good, the recommended mixes worked well and we created some delicious dishes.Overall, the food combinations were tasty, the service was friendly & helpful, the buffet system was actually a really nice touch and gave a hands-on approach to selecting your food. A charming and unique dining experience.

A bit past its best and past its prime these days. Awesome idea in theory to mix together your own ingredients and add interesting meats and fish. Only yourself to blame when the flavours aren't quite right!! Sadly I'd rather leave it to the experts! Good for groups and not so good for couples as you have to leave your table to get your food!

An interesting way to eat! There is a good variety of exotic meats to choose from and plenty of ingredients (and recipe guides) to make your own sauce from. A good sense of theatre!

An unusual restaurant, but a great way of trying out different things to normal. It was also a lot of fun to try out different concoctions of your own making, even if it didn't quite work out sometimes! The best bit is that you are in complete control of how spicy etc. your food will be. The decor was a bit bland, and could maybe do with being improved. Service was quick and efficient, and you had the added bonus of knowing that all of your food had been freshly prepared. Watch out for Facebook/Amazon Local/Daily Deals to save yourself a bit of money.

I've been to Khublai Khan's on numerous occasions. I really enjoy the unique dining experience of making your own dishes and trying out the various exotic meats. You are in control of your own dish so how much you enjoy it is ultimately up to you. I like the unlimited nature of the feast and can usually manage 5 bowls of food (yes, greedy, but it's yummy). I would definitely recommend this to people who want something a bit different.

Visited this place on Friday for dinner, the place seemed a little quiet at first but it soon got busier as the night went on. It was quite a new way of dining for me: experimentational eating! You pick the starters and desserts from the pre-planned menu, but the main course(s) are constructed by yourself! I chose Smoked Mackerel Pate and my fellow diner chose Kangaroo Haggis for starters. Both were a tasty introduction for things to come.I should warn you, this place isn't for the faint hearted, if you're not prepared to try new things, then stay clear! I, however always like to try things at least once before I reserve judgement. As say this because there is a wide range of unusual meats on offer, like camel, ostrich, wild boar, kangaroo, zebra, crocodile etc (although when we went there was no crocodile on the menu, due it only being served when they are killed for it's skin)! They do still have the usual meats, chicken etc on offer for the less experimental.Anyway, for the main course you are invited to choose from a selection of noodles or rice, a variety of veg, spices, sauces and meats/seafood. You mount these up in a wee bowl yourself. I became quite cunning in stacking the veg round the edge to create a deeper bowl and load more food in! :P You then pass it on to a friendly chef, who cooks it on a Mongolian barbecue in front of you. I enjoyed this element of having fun with your food. The only draw back would be is that because you are creating your own dish and own mix of food that you have no one to blame but yourself if it tastes bad!We shared Golden Syrup and Orange Pudding and Mars Bar Cheese Cake for dessert. The pudding was light and yummy but the cheese cake was just to rich and sweet for me. All in all it was a fun dining experience, although I advise you not to pile all the different meats into one bowl (to try them all) as you then never know what you are actually eating after it's been cooked!ps. Take an extra layer with you too, I found it a little cold in there.

If you fancy a completely unique meal (Springbok? Kangaroo? Zebra maybe?) then this is the place for you. The atmosphere and service were okay - not the nicest restaurant at the Shore, but worth it if you are looking for something completely different.

Where to start. Well this is easily the most unique place to go to eat in the whole of Edinburgh. The food is good, the staff excellent, polite and attentive and the setting is nice. The real silver bullet here however is that you select your meat, choose some accompanying vegetables, create a sauce and then it is cooked in front of you. Add to that that the meat selections are the usual beef, lamb, chicken and pork along with things such as boar, buffalo, deer, camel, kangaroo, ostrich, crocodile and even shark. The selection varies week to week and ideally you should book in advance for the usual busy/peek times.

Absolutely mental place. 100% recommend trying this place out if you like trying new stuff. However, if you don't touch anything other than chicken, then you'd best be avoiding this place. You get to pick your meat (ostrich, antelope etc.), sauce, noodles & extras from a little bar, shove it all in a bowl and leave it for the nice man to cook. You can go back for as much as your stomach can handle so it's ideal for trying lots of different meats.

Perfect staff night out. Amazing food you can't go wrong. You choose the ingredients and the chef cooked that for me on a massive stove in front of my eyes. How good is that. Great choice of meat like zebra. Most recommended
