The Granary in Edinburgh

Beautiful spot on The Shore at Leith. Very nicely decorated. Staff pleasant enough but service was slow. Ordered pre dinner cocktails but they turned up half way through our main course ( yuck espresso martini and a chicken burger). Was planning on a nice bottle of white wine and dessert but after sitting through a dry and very crispy ( slightly burnt) chicken burger and vegan fish that was mostly batter and no wine we decided to cut our losses and went home. May return for a cocktail but not for a meal.

Called in for lunchtime snacks but very disappointing. Scotch egg was tasty costing £8 and was served with medallions of bread but they were toasted and overcooked and we were not expecting to pay an additional £4 for it. Club sandwich was a disaster, too big to eat so had to disassemble it as it was approx. 5" - 6" tall and could only be eaten with a knife and fork. The three slices of ciabatta were toasted but bordered on burnt. Processed slices of supermarket chicken and ham, large thick slices of tomatoes and onions and lettuce topped off with a cold fried egg, bizarre. At a cost of £9 not good quality.

I visited it 3 days in a row during my visit to Edinburgh and each day was a pleasant experience. Positives: amazing menu, cozy atmosphere, wonderful ambiance and very clean. Concerning the service, all the staff members without exception, from the service to the manager, they were very helpful, polite and they made me feel unique.

I very rarely take the time to write reviews but on this occasion I was so disappointed on so many levels that I felt compelled to write one.On first appearance The Granary looked very appealing and had a nice atmosphere. The lady that served us was polite and helpful.I ordered a chicken, spicy pepper with rocket sandwich and asked if I could have granary bread. To my surprise granary bread was not an option even though the place was called The Granary. I then asked for any brown bread and she said she would ask the kitchen. I said if brown bread wasn’t an option then I would choose something else on the menu. Others in the party chose the ham and turkey club sandwich. Two of us added spicy cauliflower soup to our order.The lunch finally arrived after about a 40 minute wait. My sandwich came with basic toasted white sliced bread and the waitress was really apologetic. She offered to change it but sadly we had limited time as we had a flight to catch so I said I would stick with it.The sandwich was ok but the soup was not edible. It looked like dish water with little bits floating on the top (my friend said it looked like tea with gone off milk). It was very spicy hot and even though I love spicy even I felt it would be unwise to eat it. There was no sign of any cauliflower… it was literally coloured water.The club sandwich also came with toasted white sliced bread even though it was meant to be sourdough. Both the turkey and ham were shop bought cheap processed meat and very disappointing. The coleslaw on the side was tasteless.The waitress ended up giving us a small discount off the bill as an apology but if I were ever in Leith, Edinburgh again I would not return to The Granary as there are so many other places to chose from.Obviously this was our own personal experience and I see from other reviews that people have really enjoyed their meals. There were four of us and we were all disappointed with our meal.

Good service drink was okay a tad pricy though

Good fish and chips, and a good burger, too. Friendly staff. Not spectacular and a tad expensive (especially the drinks), hence the four stars.

The Granary has been around for a few years but popped in today for first time in a while. Very impressed. Fish and chips was superb - as good as I've had in a restaurant. Proper little crispy "chippy" chips and fish very fresh. Wife had a lovely bowl of soup. Best of all we were worried about turning up with 3 kids and 2 prams but the restaurant had clearly catered for this with an area for families. Less stressful for us with noisy kids and, knowing what it's like to be surrounded by noisy kids, I'm sure better for the adults only diners! Will go again no question. Great to see this shore institution at the top of its game again.

Excellent food and drink in a great location. Kids menu has three choices of starters, mains and dessert. Take a window seat to watch the world go by.

Had vegan fish and chips and my partner had the chicken burger and skinny fries. Lovely, tasty food with great attention to detail (mine had mushy peas, gerkins and vegan tartare and was served on an old style custom designed newspaper). Smart venue inside. Ideal for sunny lunch by the quay.

Very lovely place for dinner. All food taste excellent and well presented. The staff are very busy but very patient and responsive. We love the ox cheek pie the most. Highly recommended.
