Very disappointed. If you’re wondering why 2 stars, it’s because we’ve previously had good experiences at The Melville, but last night felt extremely let down.My wife works as a Paramedic and her shift generally doesn’t allow for early dining. I made a booking on The Melville’s automated booking system for 7:30pm, which I don’t think is a dreadfully late booking. At about 5:30, I received a phone call to tell me that they had run out of Sunday Roasts. This has happened before, no biggie. We could order from the regular a la carte. I’d anticipated my wife returning home after her shift, but she went directly to The Melville only to be told that the kitchen was closed – the time was 7:32. She was told that – had we been there at 7:30 they would have accommodated us.Having taken the time to phone earlier that evening, why would the staff not have shared that the kitchen would close so sharply? Had we been aware of this, we could have arrived earlier and ordered for my wife in her absence. Instead, it appears that there was no room at the Inn

Food was good, a bit pricey for what you got. I ordered the fish cakes with a poached egg the egg was fully cooked not runny as a poached eggbshould be. Then I ordered a sticky toffee pudding that i was waiting for, for over 45 minutes - despite asking for my order 2 times. I can appreciate that it was Saturday evening but service was not that busy to be left waiting for a pudding for as long as I was. Quality of the food was OK though, service should be more attentive.

Had a Sunday roast of three different meats, roast beef, turkey and belly pork Wow it was absolutely delicious!! The amount of food was awesome and veg came separately in a bowl again the amount of veg could feed 4 people easily. The Yorke pud was large and looked home cooked which is definitely what you want with your roast none of thus frozen rubbish.

My friend and I met up for a long awaited catch up and a drink. Both of us were driving so we both opted for the non alcoholic pink gin.We were seated by the fire, which was cosy and the 'gin' was fabby...had it with lemonade and it actually tasted like the real thing!!Staff were lovely, great atmosphere and will definitely go again.

Food was brilliant, I had the slow cooked beef which was lovely. Everyone else (6 other people) enjoyed their various dinner choices. We were sat near the fire, which was a treat on a cold evening. Prices were good, had a variation of average to expensive depending on the meal you picked. Service was slow but we didn't mind too much as we were not in a rush. All in all, lovely food, facilities and staff.

Very nice lunch, only complaint would be, upon end of meal and waiter asking for anything more we required.I asked for the bill, to which he didn't return and we were left to approach the till ourselves. If you do waiter service, carry out the job to the end.

Delicious food and great value - can highly recommend the homemade fishcakes with hollandaise and the pork belly, plus the banoffee and the chocolate brownie. Was so pleased to see it quite busy after what must have been a difficult couple of years.

Probably (definitely) the best burger I've ever had, anywhere! We had Fish and chips, the House burger and a calamari starter with the mains. Everything was top notch, couldnt have asked for anything better. The host's were a delight too. We'll definitely be going again when we next visit Scotland. Totally understated!
