Gearrannan Blackhouse Village Cafe in Eilean Siar

Visited in January when buildings closed but still a very interesting place to visit and see how the inhabitants used to live.

Totally love this place, so much history , a living exhibition with the guy on the loom. To think the last people moved out in the 1970s ! Well worth a visit if in the area. A small cafe too which with limited places to grab a brew is important

We stumbled across this place accidently, just a small detour off main road. Great example of a blackhouse village. One is a visitor centre, 1 is a museum, 1 is an exhibition and a few others are hostel accommodation! There is a small entrance fee but it is worth it and you can also go onto the small beach there too.

Feel like in an old fairy tale where the gods of the sea and earth during polar nights in more than one story appeared by a constantly burning fire. Fantastic place, especially when there aren't many people around.

Well worth a visit, amazing to see how they lived all those years ago. The restoration of the village is fantastic, will definitely be back with our kids!

Unfortunately we didn't get to look in any houses due to covid, however it's still great to look around, there's also a lovely coastal walk from here with some amazing views

Interesting place, don't expect a massive museum, if a bus turns up it's full! Cafe really good, friendly staff and salmon salad fantastic

Outside buildings and thatched roof very impressive. Inside some of the artifacts were circa 1910 to 1950. Would have been more impressed if at least one building was made to look like 2,000 years ago when this design originated.

Gearrannan Blackhouse Village is a restored village, consisting of several stone cottages, mostly with thatched roofs. They are not inhabited now, although some are rented out for holiday accommodation. You can enter several of the buildings and see the accommodation the occupants used to enjoy. A man was weaving cloth in one of them.There is an entrance fee to the site and a free car park.There is a gift shop, plus a small, but adequate cafe and the staff are very friendly.The views along the coast and out to sea are excellent.I'm glad I went. It was an interesting wat to pass a couple of hours.

A really good social history. Museum house just as it was when vacated in 1974. You can rent and stay in four of the houses.
