The Cabin at John O'Groats in Highland

Leaving a five-star review to balance out the overly-harsh criticisms on here. Guys, it's a beachside fried food shack in tiny town on the edge of Scotland that exists mainly as a hub for ferries to Orkney. When we went the fish and chips were served quickly and with a smile, and tasted good. The Cabin is perfectly good for what and where it is, so go there with reasonable expectations and you will be satisfied.

I don't usually do reviews, but seeing some of the moaners on here felt compelled to give a review for these guys. Have had both fish and chips and haggis and chips a few times when up that way. They've always been immensely helpful, and the food has been great too! The service I can't fault. On one of our jaunts North, we stayed nearby at Huna, went to see if The Cabin was still open, as it was late in the season, it was, but they'd had a power cut for a good few hours. The chap that runs it said the power was due back on in a couple of hours, so pop back before they closed. So we did, and true to his word, he was still there. It then transpired that it was their last day before closing up for the winter, so he could have thought, ah, sod it I'm off, but didn't, he stayed open, as he'd said he'd be there till closing time. It's rare you find that sort of service in the modern world. Top bloke, and top business!

Who’d have thought the best fish and chips between Land’s End and John o’Groats would be at John o’Groats?!Best tasting, most freshly-cooked, fish supper I had in my 9 weeks of walking. Not the quickest (5/10 min wait) but that’s what you get when waiting for the fish to cook fresh. Had one for dinner and came back the next day for lunch!Looking at other reviews I’m wondering if this place has changed hands as my experience was very different to previous reviewers.

Scotland is a beautiful place but no where near fit for tourism!The coffee shop and bistro didn't sell breakfast, the cafe wasn't open, so had to go to this burger bar/cabin.... And what a let down! No such thing as manners or politeness! Neither the words Quality or quantity suits this place! And not even the price makes up for it. Save your money and disappointment for some where else!

An actual joke. It cost £1.50 extra for curry sauce which was made with sultanas or raisins, literally the rankest curry sauce I've ever had. Then they had the audacity to charge a whole quid for salt and vinegar on the chips which you couldn't even taste because it was covered in the vomit worthy curry sauce. Go to the ice cream shop there instead, don't waste your money.

Amazing vegan burger and absolutely lovely service. When we went a few years ago as well, we were part of Orca Watch and they were very interested and even gave us an orca watch discount on the food. Really friendly people.

We were told on arrival that they had literally just ran out of fish but the public would highly recommend the fishcakes that had been selling really really well all day........what he really really meant was they hadn't sold at all well and had fishcakes left over that had been there all day and quickly reheated them along with some frozen chip that were all tainted with some kind of rancid tasting cooking oil accompanied by peas that had been simmered away to an inch of their life.We decided after a couple of mouthfuls to bin the whole lot and not even give it to the dogs in fear of coming down with some kind of botulism for the rest of our trip.I was about to give this place the award for worst fish (cake) and chips on the NC500 but i'll keep that award for an even more expensive place in Ullapool selling equally vile tasting delights.Scotland is a beautiful place but please, someone go up there and show them how to cook fish and chips!

Yukky over cooked greasy frozen chips full off oil, (good job it was tiny portion) sliced haggis. Overpriced at £7 well and truly ripped off. Only place open apart from a hotel to eat at six in the afternoon.

We visited here during Easter Weekend, this is one of the very few places that open. Their fish and chips is very nice, the most amazing is the haggis, I had haggis in other restaurant before, but their haggis is really amazing, they said they sourced it from a nearby butcher, if you fancy a nice haggis, this is the place to be...

Absolutely lousy.First time, was great. I was the only customer at the time.Second time, we had to wait a very long time for our food. Ordered six portions of fish and chips. Everyone who arrived after we did got their food order before we did. Two girls who ordered one portion of chips got two portions.When we queried this with the young fat girl serving, she was rude.It was overpriced for what it was. £7 for fish and chips. The fish was about the length of a postcard.
