North Ronaldsay Lighthouse Cafe in Orkney Islands

I have visited this Lighthouse twice. Three years ago on a self tour of Northern Scotland and this last August. On the first tour arrival was by Logan Air, which is a great ride as the views are spectacular, because you can see such terrific detail on the ground from lower flights. Unfortunately it was just a 4 hour layover before returning to Kirkwall. However I did get to meet the legendary Billy Muir who won the TSB Pride of England Award for the 20 jobs he holds as a Community Partner for North Ronaldsay even though he is "retired"...with 20 jobs on the island. He is retired from the Northern Lighthouse Board, but still leads tours as one of his jobs.When coming over to North Ronaldsay Island this time it was by ferry. On the ferry was a large front end loader with William Muir painted on the side. He truly is a busy man.Now for the lighthouse. Having spent three days on North Ronaldsay, this time, gave much more time to explore it more fully. The three or four days is mandatory if you come by ferry as it rounds on Tuesdays and Fridays. This allows you to slow down some and be more circumspect. Visiting the Bird Observatory is wonderful as you meet others who are curious about the world and yet knowledgeable in a more relaxed and social setting. This gives time to discuss and learn more about each other, which could be called a Samuel Clemens Moment in Time. And yet there was enough time to go out and hike around the island (15.9 miles) and took most of the day to absorb the landscape/seascape for good photography.

Delicious, varied menu catering for all tastes. Quite honestly, it's the best food I've ever eaten.

Another beautiful example of a Stevenson built Lighthouse. The island has the original Lighthouse known as the beacon. The main light toes as the tallest land-based Lighthouse in the UK. The cottages are available to rent and he is where the former keeper cottages. One of the buildings has a café and a museum to visit which are both well worth seeing during your stay.

The lighthouse keeper was very friendly and gave an interesting summary of the history of the lighthouse. The lighthouse itself is perfectly maintained and its lantern testifies to the finest victorian craftsmanship. From the top you could see Sumburgh Head, Foula and Fair Isle.

Loved this place. A must when visiting North Ronaldsay.

I was lucky enough whilst staying on Sanday isle to hear about an excursion being held to North Ronaldsay Island which included the lighthouse tour. Glad I went as we got to meet one of the lighthouse keepers prior to its automation in 1998, who gave us some background. It's an amazing feat of engineering given in location, still the tallest in operation in the British isles at 42 meters and an incredible price of architecture when you get up it's 176 stairs. If you get the opportunity to visit the island and can go and see this and the original light house which stands off to one side of it, I'd highly recommend it. It's a bit of hidden treasure, there is a cafe on site at the lighthouse and another down by the ferry terminal, well worth a trip out.

It is a beautiful place in a wee island of North Ronaldsay.
