Saxa Vord Resort in Shetland Islands

We had a great stay of 3 nights in one of the Nordabrake self-catering houses. This was large and very warm (important in Unst even in July) with downstairs loo and upstairs bathroom (over bath shower only) and a well- equipped kitchen with fridge freezer, washing machine and dishwasher. Comfy beds. All very clean but perhaps a bit impersonal. Maybe that's inevitable when there are so many separate units? The outside space was unkempt. Rough grass passing for the back garden and the rotary clothes line long since collapsed in the Shetland wind.The reception and bar and restaurant staff in the main complex were unfailingly helpful and friendly and went way beyond the call of duty in getting us a piece of missing kitchen equipment. Food in the restaurant was good, very good considering the geographical location, with a wide-open menu well cooked.Downsides. Price. Down to location and lack of competition probably. Also the general rather grotty aspect of the whole place on arrival. The Nordabrake houses and the main block and grounds are well maintained but other parts of this large former RAF base are apparently falling into rack and ruin with holes in the roofs. Having to drive past decaying 1950s barrack blocks and derelict and empty 1980s buildings en route to reception is disquieting. But persevere, if gets better!Would we go back? Yes. And recommended it for other visitors to the amazing, beautiful, quirky island that is Unst.

We enjoyed staying there, a 3 bedroom house with a good kitchen, washing machine, lovely sun room & spacious lounge room. The meals were good, but menu was limited especially for any vegetarians. Wifi coverage not strong, but considering the geographical location it was managable. We had a great stay of 3 nights.

Very good second time have stayed in hostel accommodation facilites very clean staff customer focused. Dining room well serviced and food good. Would stay again.

An OK exhibit. But the good not is the history of the radar station and the quality of the facility itself. They will serve coffee etc from the RAF visitor centre which is in the old mess. We also drove up to the old radar station and there is a magnificent view!

I have not stayed at the resort but the restaurant is good and is well patronized by local people. The menu is small but everything is well-cooked and presented and local produce is used wherever possible. The dining room is unpretentious and with no view to speak of but is bright and airy and has a very pleasant, welcoming ambience. The staff too are always pleasant and welcoming. The bar is reasonably priced and serves beer and gin that is produced in the brewery across the road. On Tuesdays and Fridays fish suppers are served to take away or eat in (small surcharge). These are excellent and very good value.

Food ok, plenty of it. Expect a limited menu as you are unlikely to go anywhere more remote in the UK. Be prepared for wet and windy weather and if the wind does drop then beware the clouds of midges. The Unst wild Haggis can be hunted Sept to March.

Great lunch stop. The food was good, the staff were friendly and well organised. There's an interesting small museum covering the site's beginnings as an RAF base.

I stayed in one of the chalets that can be rented out, very place and near to everything you might need, the only improvement that would make it is WiFi. Due to lack of any mobile signal in this location its very hard to contact anyone! Very good service!

I served there years ago, it was lovely to go backthinks have changed, but they haven't - still lovely warm welcoming peopleaccomadation is warm and funtional and does the jobbus from the ferry takes you right to the front door

This place is home from home, I used to live here in the early 80's, and left. Went back up last year for the first time in 33 years, yes it has changed in many ways. But still amazing, so much to do. So much to see. Love it and will definitely keep going back up
