Where is Queens Head?

🏠 25 High Street Downe, Downe, Orpington BR6 7US

"Awarded Pub of the Year 2014, by the Bromley section of CAMRA, and included in the good beer guides for 8 years, it is an independant family run 16th century traditional country pub in the centre of Downe Village, a short drive or bus journey from Orpington or Bromley. The public bar (Darwin Bar, yes Charles Darwin himself drank here) has three roaring log fires (in the winter), along with leather chesterfields, a piano and a darts board. It also has three small restaurants as well as a small snug bar for quiet, more intimate drinks. For the summer, it has a large walled patio / garden area perfect for relaxing after those country rambles, Bar Snacks, full Menu and daily specials available made from localy sourced produce."

We visited on a weekday afternoon for a late lunch and were really happy with the friendly welcome and service. There was a generous portion size and, for a small pub, a choice of three ales was good. The pub itself is fairly average, but it has lots of historical interest and I have given an extra star for the great service. Many thanks to the staff there. 🙂

What a charming pub and a charming owner. The pub must be about 500 years old and as the character to go with it.It has a decent menu and the bottle of Rioja that we purchased complimented our delicious meal. So, the Salt & Pepper Squid I had as a starter was scrummy, if not a trifle over cooked. The Rock Fish & Chips I had as a main (You can see my theme here?) was tender and beautifully cooked. A few more chips would have been welcome and perhaps another choice of peas... mushy, puree. Will most certainly be going back there.

Downe is a beautiful village and the pub has really nice ambience with a roaring fire. The service was excellent and the staff is very friendly. Unfortunately the food quality was very underwhelming however the cake selection was great and really tasty.

Loads of character and friendly service in this pretty village's pub. There was a great range of ales on tap and an excellent reasonably priced selection of pub classics on the menu. We still had 5 miles of walking to do so unfortunately didn't try out the sweets..

Visited today after our usual place was too busy. A warm welcome then we ordered drinks while checking the menu. We had a prawn baguette, ham baguette and a steak and ale pie with lovely chunky chips. A generous salad with the baguettes and lots of tasty ham. 😋 . Excellent service and smiles from all 3 ladies working there. So thank you!

Had a wonderful Sunday afternoon meal here. Excellent food and excellent service - lovely, friendly and helpful waitresses. Would thoroughly recommend the nut roast - the best one I've ever eaten!

·

Super cute pub with nice outdoor seating space. Food and drinks were good, prices usual for London-ish areas. When I was there staff was maybe a little too distracted having to wave them down to take our order after a longer wait.

Amazing delivered afternoon tea from Jackie and Nigel at the Queens Head, Downe Village. The cakes were incredible, being light, scrumptious and beautifully prepared. The scone and cream were a delight and made for one of the best afternoon teas we have had in a very long time.Thank you for the perfect afternoon treat.

Fantastic village pub after a long walk or bike ride in the countryside! Nice selection of cask ales and good food. The pub currently has a large tent outside with good social-distancing and a heater inside. But still best to wear some warm layers on chilly days.

Top notch pub lunch - much better than most restaurants - I had the home made Cottage Pie with ‘fresh’ veg and my friend had home made fish cakes with salad and chips. Both were absolutely delicious and it was topped with a very good glass of Cab Sav. Highly recommend and would return if in the area again.Really friendly and efficient staff, excellent t COVID precautions in place.
