Bull and Gate in Camden

Wonderful roast worth travelling a little further for. Price was reasonable and decor was amazing!

My friend and I happened upon this cozy local after strolling through Hampstead Heath and searching for a place to rest our legs. We were drawn in by the cozy ambience and the bustling yet muted interior. It seemed like a place cherished by locals.We were greeted warmly and given a beautiful table in the dining room. Jamie was our lovely and attentive server. She was very kind and accommodating and made our meal all the more pleasant the whole way through.We were immediately impressed by the menu, which featured rustic British dishes with thoughtful flavor combinations. The menu is more elevated than your run-of-the-mill pub fare but without the inflated prices.We were stunned by how delicious our food was. My duck was flavorful and the berries were a surprising yet nice touch. My friend ordered the chicken and leek pie, which arrived piping hot with delicious broccoli rabe and mashed potatoes. Everything was fresh and cooked simply, letting the ingredients and pairings speak for themselves. The cutlery and glasses were also beautiful.We will definitely be back soon. I'm hoping to try out the pub quiz soon!

This pub is really really beautiful. Man, it's like a place out of a movie. They have vegan roast, Wich was quite okay. They have more than one option and other vegan and veggie foods.

Easily the best pub quiz I have ever been to, not just the normal round after round of questions. Fun activities included a paper plane contest and a drawing competition of the perfect birthday party. Atmosphere was great, food yummy, beer tasty. Who could ask for more?

Had a gorgeous vegan roast there last weekend with my partner. Service was great and the food was delicious. Will be returning asap :)

I had such high hopes for a lovely Christmas dinner with my parents, we’d never been out for dinner before on the big day. At £80 a head and service charged before the date, my expectations were reasonable.A lovely greeting when we arrived and a glass of bubbly. So far so good! Unfortunately, it was all downhill from there. The dining room itself was cold. At one point, three other diners on separate tables had their coats on whilst eating, yet the staff were oblivious. I had to ask for a heater above our table to be switched on halfway through our meal. I also had to ask for water as it was never offered.Throughout five courses, we were given one check back on our food and waited an excruciatingly long time for plates to be cleared between each course. There were about five members of staff in the dining room who spent most of their time waiting for food at the pass,, totally oblivious to the customers behind them.The biggest disappointment of all was the main turkey dinner course. We immediately had to send all three dishes back as they were only just lukewarm. In fact, the pigs in blankets were cold. Not room temperature, cold inside. Our plates were taken away and returned a few minutes later (the same ones) after being zapped with heat.We left without paying for one pint of beer (a genuine mistake) and were chased out of the building my a member of staff with a receipt that included service charge on the single pint of beer (you couldn’t make it up).As a Christmas gift to my parents, it was all very disappointing and rather embarrassing. A cold, over-lit dining room with zero ambience and substandard food and service.It should have been magical. It could have been, and probably would have been, in the hands of others. Next year, we’ll revert to home cooking.

Came in for a Sunday roast having booked a table in advance and we were seated in the bar area. Once our order was placed via the app, the drinks arrived promptly but the soup starter arrived 45 mins later, and tasted very bland, the bread being the only redeeming factor as it had a good texture.The mains arrived an hour after placing the order and it wasn’t hot nor cold, just lukewarm. We were just glad to be able to finally eat but the food itself was very disappointing. The Yorkshire puddings were dry, crunchy and wafer-like in their consistency, rather than being soft and fluffy as they should be, the roast potatoes were also dry and lacked flavour. The roast beef was average at best, and again lacked basic seasoning. The braised ox cheek that came with the dish had the potential to be nice but was let down by the fact it was barely even warm. The vegetables were ok, but ultimately I fail to understand how a dish drizzled in gravy could still be so dry. The vegan squash and chestnut filo parcel wasn’t much better either.For the prices being charged at £30 per person for our meal, there are many better places in the area with better service and far better food.

Let’s start with the positives.The decor is great.A true “pub” feel.The staff were welcoming, accommodating and exactly what you’d expect in a local.The “less” positive.A very limited menu was on offer (beef burger, plant burger or a pie) because of being let down with deliveries - most pubs/restaurants in the Kentish/Camden Town area seem to have the same problem at this point in time.The food looked good when it came out but…The “Guinness game” pie wasn’t venison as stated but tasted more like beef. The taste of Guinness was non existent. The filling salty beyond belief - as was the gravy and the prospect of pairing of an expectant sweet gamey meat with rich Guinness and sweet potato mash and parsnip was too much and I switched out the mash for chunky chips.Worse still, I cracked open the pie and found a lovely **white hair** sitting on top of a chunk of meat…The burger was dry, tasteless and the salad looked and tasted as if it had started to rot.

The Boulogne Bar, upstairs at the Bull & Gate, proved to be the perfect location for my birthday party. There's plenty of space and comfortable seating and tables, it feels like a classy lounge. There's air con and the windows open, which was important to us in these covid/ventilation times. The venue's music system was made available to us and the hot buffet food we ordered was exactly what was required. But the best thing were the attentive staff of the Bull & Gate who were available to help with any last-minute requests.

Walked in on a quite midweek afternoon. The service was friendly and they had some gluten free options too which was great. The decor is nice and over all the pub as a nice atmosphere.The food however was sub par. The sausages did not snap as you cut into them and the fries that came with the burger tasted old. Good pub for a drink but I will not recommend it for a meal.It's located close to the Kentish town station which is nice and there are lots of other stores in the area.
