Elaine was very lovely and welcoming. I don’t usually enjoy my nights out because I don’t go out, but she had really mad sure everything was running smoothly and efficiently. Overall the service and staff were great! I’m very happy and I recommend! Many thanks again!

The Commercial is a very intriguing pub at the present time. It's a good old fashioned boozer in a great location and the main chap managing the bar seems a good guy. Often a good local crowd and a fun atmosphere.Unfortunately though many people's interpretation of a 'good pub' relies on good beer and the regular welcome you receive. On the first point, the beer of late has been flat as a pancake. God knows what is happening there but it's been the same for a while. There seems to be no point in mentioning it as the giggly girls and gangly lads behind the bar (who seem to think they're some form of comedy duo) seem to think it's all one big joke. And speaking of some of the younger staff, their general surly behaviour and attitude is simply not up to scratch to be public facing. It seems when the main manager isn't around, some of staff seem to end up spending a suspicious amount of time hanging around the disabled toilet (often going in together in 2s and 3s) and acting somewhat like they are under the influence of something a bit more hard hitting than half a Doom Bar. I don't care what these individuals do or don't do in the private lives but it's not particularly professional ( particularly going in to the toilets with a large knife which I'm guessing isn't used as a bog brush)Time for a clear out of some of the staff

Good pub right opposite herne hill station. It has a good selection of drinks and shows the sports. Can be fairly quiet during the beginning of the week but gets busier towards the weekends.

Worst staff ever experienced.Booked a table for a birthday and rugby. Called up to reconfirm as the person we initially spoke to didn't sound very interested and was very short, which didn't sound right. When we called to double check the booking they said nothing is booked and were extremely rude on the phone saying all fully booked. Unbelieveably poor staff.

I’ve attended this pub for the last two years and never had any issue. However I attended early evening today and had a terrible experience. I ordered a pint of Doom Bar (which I drink regularly) and immediately on sitting at my table and taking a first sip realised it tasted odd. My partner also tried it and agreed it tasted odd. We had had two sips. I am always hesitant to return a drink and to be honest never do it, but took this back to the bar. I spoke with the young guy working and informed him that the beer tasted odd. He tried the tap and said it was the end of the barrel. He then tried a sip of my pint (pouring it into a glass) and said it did taste off. He checked whether the wrong pint had been pulled. It hadn’t. I queried whether I could get a replacement given he agreed that it tasted odd! He said not without the manager approving I asked for the manager to be told he was on a call upstairs. The guy at the bar, after I had sat down, then proceeded to call over an older man at the pub (I’m a young woman) and asked him to try it because obviously my opinion confirmed by the barman himself was not adequate. This was a very odd, patronising experience and not what I would normally expect of a decent pub. I called the pub back later and spoke with the manager. I could hear him speaking to the guy who was on the bar. He said the bar man denied saying it tasted odd. I asked him to ask the girls who were working and stood next to him, he purported to do this but immediately said they said it was fine. And then proceeded to hang up the phone on me. Honestly such a disappointing experience from what I’ve always thought was a nice pub. Not the cheapest either! Will not be going back, try the others in herne hill instead.

I went here earlier this week and found the bar staff to be very rude. I've been here many times before but it seems to have gone down hill. Such a shame as it's a great location.

A smile from the staff would help. Also I don't want to see them throwing paper cloths/wipes into an open bin that has over-flowed onto the pub floor. Disgusting. But, what a great looking (inside and out) pub. Seating wonderfull. Let's see what happens next time..

The picture of the “mojito” speaks for itself ..£8.95 for a mojito out of a can, which also tasted exactly the same as the overly sweet lidl canned mojito, was not even poured to the top, with dead withered rotting mint. I would have been embarrassed to serve this to a customer, the mint looked as unbothered as (some) of the staff. As it wasn’t filled to a reasonable level in the glass, it looks like they used one can to fill 2 glasses and they charged £17.90 for that. Some (not all) of the staff looked like they were really sad being there, not sure if they just should not be in a customer facing role or whether higher management are making them hate their job. This kind of environment sets the tone for the pub. I thought that maybe the freshly made drinks would be better, nope! The gin tasted like it had been open for years. I have the same gin at home and it tasted nothing like it. When gin has been opened for a while it loses its flavour including colour in some cases, any one working at a bar should know that. The prices they charged were extortionate considering the poor quality of the drinks. No one I was with had a good drink, and we all left after the second one as we all had enough. I am frustrated I spent the amount I did on drinks that were not even proper drinks. Hands down the worst pub I have ever been to. Plenty of better choices in herne hill!!!

Brilliant team, especially the pink haired girl called Linda I think. I have a physical disability and learning difficulties and this girl made me feel special and welcome, this being at a busy time with the rugby. My partner is also disabled and now also wants to visit because the service and reception is so good. A joyous visit with super staff, that Linda is a credit to her peers and managers. Well done...we shall return

Despite being fully booked, the staff found a table for us (3 adults and 2 children). The food was really nice, we got the Sunday roasts and fish and chips - they were delicious and came in large portions. We’ll definitely be back and book a table at the back, where the it’s a bit brighter!
