Really excellent.8 of us (age 50-60) from Scotland and Ireland, some hillwalking, some sightseeing, were looking for a convenient base in Newton Stewart. With a few exceptions, Newton's offerings are pretty low key (or overpriced) so it was a fantastic surprise to discover how very good Derek's place is.Spotlessly clean - rooms, bar and dining room. Great food, very well cooked and presented.Great service, friendly and helpful.Excellent value. The Black Horse is not without its bells and whistles but that is not what it's about. What it does, it does simply and very, very well. All 8 of us gave it a 10 and rated it best of all pubs, eating houses and venues in our 5 day trip.Douglas Reid and friends.

Went in for just a pint, the man who started to serve us was very pleasant, however, when the Irish woman served us she was very rude about the fact we wanted to pay with card. She made passive aggressive comments to our faces about how it was ridiculous to pay by card (even though it's 2020) and then proceeded to come to our table and continue to be sassy, make rude comments and let us know we weren't welcome. Nice man, mean lady.

Great valentine's meal. The sliders were very, very good. Lovely mini ciabatta rolls! The chips were cracking! The slide show of Newton Stewart and Minnigaff past and present was really good too! Great service pleasant waiting staff. Highly recommend.

Lovely decor. Well furnished. My only gripe is the fact the big bottles of wine aren't cold enough. Apart from that. It's well priced for alcohol. £12.95 for bottle of wine. About £3.30 a pint. And a vodka shot £1.60!! Love it.

The staff make this place.Be aware that this is an Inn standard hotel. The food is typically a pub/gastro menu which has just a selection of options. This is to my preference though, large menus put me off. We couldn't fault the cooking, everything was very tasty, the Haggis burger was particularly satisfying. The rooms are well appointed, all with ensuites and tastefully decorated. The bed was comfortable. The most redeeming feature of this hotel are its staff. A previous reviewer mentioned that nothing is too much. Well that is very true! We were no doubt more demanding guests since we had our 5 month baby with us in the room. The staff couldn't do enough to ensure we were comfortable though, going above and beyond to help from unloading the car of our array of baby things to helping set up the baby monitor and keeping it powered. They also served us drinks on the dining side of the hotel where we could have a little privacy, which meant the bar staff had to keep dashing between the two bars to serve us and the rest of their customers. Thanks for having us and making a pair of needy guests feel very welcome. We look forward to seeing you again.
