Where is The Main Street Trading Company Cafe?

🏠 Main St, St Boswells, Melrose TD6 0AT

"Based in the beautiful Scottish Borders village of St Boswells, we like to think of The Mainstreet Trading Company as a destination in itself. Back in 2008 we renovated a former auction house, to create a light and airy space filled with books and the smell of coffee. In 2012, work was completed in the barn behind the main shop to create Mainstreet Deli & Home, launched by Tom Kitchin. 2018 marked our 10th birthday at Mainstreet, we had an amazing year, culminating in winning Britain’s Best Small Shop."

Lovely friendly coffee shop, with the added bonus of a bookstore and separate deli & craft store to browse. Good range of Scottish gins to choose from.

Visited for a leisurely birthday lunch rather than the books this time (though the books are great and the staff very knowledgeable about them). As always, great salads and soup and cake to follow. Plenty of choice for my veggie daughter. The veggie options were so good this carnivore went for them too, and wasn't disappointed.

Nice in theory...good bookshop but cafe was dominated by one man talking... Not really his fault it would be hard not to be as all hard surfaces and tables very close together...not very relaxing and didn't feel like lingering..limited menu and cake was dry. Nice service and coffee though...would go back if had some time to kill or of wanted a book and the atmosphere was better at the time.I think you have to reserve at lunch.

One of my favourite bookshops. Great selection and variety and good sized kids section. The deli is great too, lots of home items like pans and jars, Nkuku and other brands. The cafe is often busy so book if you are planning to eat there. Parking on site.

Tried to go for lunch but it was too busy - you need to book a table before you go! The bookshop is lovely and well stocked and the deli and homeware shop across the back courtyard are a must visit! The deli has an excellent selection of delicious food and drink and also does takeaway coffee.

If on the A68, turn off to St Boswells for coffee, a break, and just about the best bookstore experience in Scotland! If you're not on the A68... divert! You won't regret it. This is a destination bookshop, with additional options, including a Deli and a Home shop behind the main event. For me the bookshop is star, though, designed with readers in mind... sparkling, with its coterminous coffee shop (you can book a table ahead!) adding to the sense of surprise and delight. And take your kids (if you're not actually temporarily escaping from them)... the stock of books for children of all ages is fabulous. The range and stock of works is impressively wide and thoughtfully provided... there's an expert hand at this tiller. Probably it must be viewed as a small bookshop, but feels slightly larger than many of the dwindling numbers of these small town oases. I was so intrigued and charmed by my first visit that I returned the same day, this time with friends and family, who all agreed that the promised wonderment had not been over sold! We raided the Deli and the Home shop too, but all left with (more in my case) books that delighted us, having whiled away a browsing hour in blissful peace; on sensory overload we had to drag our indulgent selves away.Incidentally, it was also a nostalgic surprise to have a decent biblio-friendly conversation with the booksellers at the counter. Truly, you must go; it's a delight, and you will carry off further delights to sustain you at leisure. Enjoy!

Aw man this place is great! Some of the best gluten free bakes I’ve ever had, great books and fabulous deli - amazing for a cider-lover and cheese-lover. The cafe gets busy but the pleasant young staff cope admirably.

Wow, what a lovely place, after a great light lunch, and a browse of a superbly curated bookshop we crossed the yard to an amazing deli. Our first visit but we will be back soon and often I predict. Highlights: best ever tomato soup, great GF pastry for the flan, selection of local books, amazing range of cider and some very pretty wrapping paper.
