Really nice takeaway - very tasty, juicy cod, lovely batter and earthy, flavoursome chips. Nice mushy peas too. We have eaten in before, but find you get less for your money than takeaway. Very nice - recommended

Amazing fish and chips! If you have a small appetite, go steady as I was gutted to have had to leave some of mine! Delicious food, great service!

Arrived on my cycle at approximately 19:05, after waiting almost ten minutes I asked the two people in front of me if they had been served ? Their answer was no, a gentleman was already being served when I walked in, this is very unusually slow serves so decided to take my custom else where.

Best fish n chips in the NE by far, I eat there weekly. Today was let down, slightly, by the stale bread that was served with the meal. Why let yourselves down Bells. You are at the top of your field so why not serve nice bread with your meals and not basic sliced bread, which today was inedible.

Excellent. Fish and chips cooked to perfection. Staff very friendly and efficient. Well worth the visit.

We took the trouble to book a table weeks ago for early on a Friday evening, ahead of a visit over Christmas to family in Durham. On arrival we seems not to have a booking and were shown to a small table near the entrance and in front of the serving hatch. This is not what I felt was acceptable.Nearby was a better and larger table set for two with a reservation sign on the table. We requested that as we had booked we would like to move. This was referred up to 'the manager' but we were told that this was not possible. The restaurant was about two thirds full at that point. Our food arrived and was quite acceptable. Halfway through our meal two customers arrived and were immediately shown to the 'reserved' table. Clearly one rule for some but not for others. We will not be returning if our custom is not valued. Poor show!

First night out in Durham for more than 8 months. All professionals together having a great time. Been to Bells in the city many many times and never experienced a meal below near perfect. However, whilst ordering at 1940hrs on 11th December 2021, a female member of staff walked through from the restaurant to the takeaway side, and ordered 2 customers out of the stop! They weren’t with my party, but they were simply happy, singing and in good spirits! After all, it’s Christmas, what would one expect? She was offensive! She then told everyone in the shop that singing is banned!! We were appalled, drink wasn’t a factor for me, I remember the event clearly, hence I mention the time, so that the owner can check their CCTV. I was discussing the event with one of my friends while waiting for our food, when the female again returned to the counter and said, “If you want food, then I suggest you stop taking about me!’ I asked if she was the owner, to which she replied “No”. As this was recorded on my friends mobile phone, I wouldn’t be surprised to see it on YouTube. Overall, great food, very very poor staff! I hope the owner follows this up. This happened in the Restaurant in Market Place, Durham.

This is our second trip to Bells. Been really good both times we visited. Nice venue to eat in as well. Recommended.

Poor quality chips, undercooked and surprisingly dry.Kids portions were a good size, two sausages, but rather expensive.Batter was perfect.Kids ice-cream was very good.Haggis was excellent however three small balls for £3.45 is a bit stingy. Some kind of metal coating on three chips, apparently from the new chipping machine.
