Not very good. Table wobbled and was very sticky. Was given water cress not lettuce, a few potato skins instead of chips (unlike my wife who got what the menu said) been here several times but this is the last.

·

Excellent place for breakfast with very tasty savoury menu options, and equally decent drink offerings, plus fantastic cakes if you desire something sweet to start your day really well ! Also worth mentioning the friendly and helpful staff. Dog friendly too.

·

Love coming here food fantastic friendly staff but struggled to find a table at first due to students taking up seating areas for hours with only one cup of coffee/tea... to do their studying, one girl in there didn't even buy anything just brought her own drink. Think you should do a maximum of one hour per table at busy times. Sorry to moan ...

Lovely place to come for a coffee or an afternoon cup of tea. Cakes are great and customer service is also good. Would be five stars but place is not at all wheelchair friendly, so good only for outside visit but not really for inside.

Lovely place with a good menu to choose from. Friendly staff and delicious food, will visit again when I'm next in Durham.

Didn't have a great experience here. My friend and I are students and wanted to get coffee and lunch. We decided to sit at Chapters cafe for a couple of hours doing our work on our laptops (without wifi, which is surprising), and we were pleasant customers. After a while the manager came over to us and pretty much kicked us out. He told us that there were other tables that needed to be filled but the cafe wasn't very busy at all. We decided to go to a much friendlier, value-for-money, wifi-included cafe over the road.Overrated and the prices are not student-friendly. The food and drink was nice but won't be returning because we were not treated with respect.

Unbelievable experience here today. I must spend over £40 a week easily in this place. Today Sunday during LumiereDurham was very busy. Queueing out of the door at Vennels Cafe.Arrived with my partner at 4:05pm. Manager standing out front smoking and cafe virtually empty. Young guy immediately informed me they were closing but we could get coffee only. Shelves full of cakes on display.I asked him what time they were actually closing and was it 5pm. Yes he replied. At this point the manager came back in and said we could have half an hour max. We felt most unwelcome and decided to leave. As we crossed the street the manager beckoned me calling me mate. He said I don’t appreciate you calling us “wan**rs”. I don’t use foul language especially in front of my girlfriend who is an ex cop. I was incensed by the accusation. I don’t mumble under my breath and if I have something to say to someone I will state it clearly. After years of supporting this cafe I will never go again. I’m afraid this attitude to early closing is a growing trend and the empty cafe a complete reflection on the prevailing management.I could go on but you get the picture.

Ahhh yes, I came here just the other day (Friday 6th Augustus MMXXI) and certainly had a nice experience after a long walk around Durham. During our shelter from the rain inside the café, I very much enjoyed my coffee and this peanut and chocolate cake (pictured), another bonus being the friendly staff who were also very helpful. If you are passing, bless yourself with a 15 minutes in this fine café!

Had a fab brunch here this week. Huge sausage and mushroom brioche for me and crispy bacon brioche for him with 2 large americanos £15 and worth every penny 🤤 seating is a little precarious as on a bank so we needed to hold onto the table! Really friendly staff and toilets available upstairs.

Wow. What a delightful experience! In desperate need of a pick-me-up on a grizzly Thursday morning, I strolled into this fine establishment and nervously mumbled that I'd never had coffee before and was looking for some help. The delightful staff behind the counter then talked me through the ideal starter coffee for beginners (a mocca by the way) and before you could say 'coffee bean' a silky smooth coffee was staring me in the face. I hungrily gulped it down and felt instantly refreshed, although that may have just been from the staff's wide smiles! Many thanks all and I wish you the best of success for the future!
