Pack Horse in County Durham

I have been coming here for years but my experience with my food when we visited recently was very disappointing, I had hunters chicken, the chicken was very rubbery, I could tell as soon as they put the plate down that it wasn’t proper fresh chicken breast, I asked the lad was it fresh chicken breast and he told me no it gets bought in already cooked 🤦🏻‍♀️ My partner had steak which had fat running all the way through it, it was supposed to be medium cooked but came well done with no taste what so ever, we won’t be returning it was a complete waste of money.

The staff were friendly and helpful which was good but the steak and ale pie was the most boring thing I've ever ate in my life. Even 5 hours later I'm still angry about it so deciding to write a review.I'm assuming that the kitchen staff heat up food that is already prepared rather than make their own otherwise they should be ashamed if that's their own creation. What really gets me is that I'm not a chef yet I can make a steak pie 100 times better than that, yet someone got paid to create that flavourless disappointment on a plate I had the misfortune of eating. I'd happily back up my claim and stop by and hand some real pies over that I made myself with the hopes that it gives someone a kick up the backside to get it right and serve an edible pastry item

Service was really poor got sat at a booth and the table was so wobbly i had to hold my drink. Asked waiter to be move to be told the other other table available was just as wobbly. Starter ok nothing special then on to the main, main came and items were missing eg onion rings and sauce so had to ask to get these even though they were ordered. When the items finally arrived i poured my sauce (peppercorn) over my mixed grill and it was awful and ruined my full main. My partner spoke to a waiter and got he was sorry this happened but unfortunately he could not help. Food was terrible. Save your money and go else where.I won't be back

We had an absolutely wonderful meal here last night. I had hunters chicken from the gluten free menu and my husband had a mixed grill. Both were very tasty, no wonder it’s always busy. You can have two main courses, such as the hunters chicken for under 10£. on weekdays. We didn’t realise what we were missing just along the road! Beautifully presented too.

Always great food at a decent price with good service. Massive menu where everyone will find something to their taste. Normally have a decent ale or two on tap. Friendly atmosphere for all occasions.

Always great here never had a bad experience. Plenty of the menu to suit everyone, always fast service and there's tables outside for the rare occassions when there's sun

My wife and I have just visited and enjoyed it. We both chose the surf, turf and cluck. The steak was cooked just as we like it and the chicken was moist and not dried out like some places. The young lady who served us was very friendly and efficient. It's been a while since we were last here but on the evidence of today's visit it will not be long until we go back.

Fantastic meal and service yesterday, didn't opt for a traditional Sunday lunch but went for the steak and ale pie with mash and peas instead with gravy, absolutely fantastic and will definitely be getting it again , staff are always friendly polite and courteous , lovely friendly pub with good food 👍

We decided to try the Pack Horse again after a couple of years. They still don't know what grilled chicken is as the chicken looks like its been removed from the freezer bag and microwaved. I was expecting more from my steak and was left disappointed as I had to rush my meal as it got colder and colder. On the plus side one of our party really enjoyed their meal of fish and chips. In conclusion I personally will not be returning.
