The Ancient Unicorn Inn Restaurant in County Durham

Welcome place in the centre of Bowes to wait for the taxi to Barnard Castle. Best flapjack I have ever eaten. I was taken aback here, as at several pubs in the area, at the lack of local artisanal beers.

Loved the place! It's has a pub and coffee shop as well as a B&B. The rooms were clean and a good size. This is a great place to stop if you are doing the Pennine way.

Perfect for short stop overs .Comfortable bed with great shower in room in old stable block opposite the main house..Bar and small restaurant . Only stayed 1 night but would visit again for longer.

Lovely pub, good beers, gins, wine etc. Home cooked food delicious both dinner & breakfast.Stayed overnight and the room was really nice decorated in country style with 2 comfy leather chairs. Nice bathroom & both room & bathroom immaculate.Beautiful little village with church & Castle. Plenty of walks from the door & easy access to A66.

Exactly what we wanted!A lovely clean, comfortable room with ensuite. Situated in a quiet little village with plenty of places to walk with our dog. The staff were very friendly and helpful, the breakfast was delicious and a huge pot of tea which finished our food off perfectly.Not one negative... we will definitely return.

Bar staff. Not freindly. No eye contact. Asked about the pub her tone was rude.It appears that unless you book a room there they are not bothered. Shame the pub was cosy.

Proper old pub, was very quiet when we went, but landlord said it does get busy.Landlord nice man, quite chatty and welcoming, we had a piece of cake with our coffee, very good, landlord had made himself. Would go again. It also has bed and breakfast rooms.

Had a very nice last minute stay with our doggy. We ended up arriving at 22:30 to a closed hotel but the hotel had put a nice note on the door directing us to our room on opposite side of the courtyard. All very comfortable and the shower was very good! Breakfast was ideal, good selection laid out on a table with a cooked breakfast as requested. Bowes is a lovely village and the castle worth taking a walk up to.

Second time here and we love this place. Comfortable well appointed rooms which open straight on to the courtyard so great if you are travelling with a dog. Parking is right outside your door.Tranquil little village with great dog walks right on the doorstep. Lovely food ....Pub operates a coffee shop during the day and serves good hearty meals in the evening....great breakfasts. Owners are friendly and accommodating without being intrusive. All in all - highly recommend!
