The Kingslodge Inn in County Durham

Beautiful rooms and inn. Perfect either for staying in or going out to Durham. Being next to a nature reserve is relaxing. Will definitely plan at visiting again!

Did not stay. Ate in the restaurant. Two eighty-year-olds expected to walk the length of two rooms to ‘order at the bar’. Staff claimed it had nothing to do with them....’company policy’.Almost impossible to attract the attention of a server to find out what kind of soup. Then subjected to po-faced service, not a smile, nor an acknowledgement.Food OK.Then discovered on my phone that my husband had earlier rung the restaurant with an important message to ring him. This was not passed on. Paying at the till, I queried this only to have it shrugged off...the ‘waiter’ eventually admitted he had taken the call.There were only seven or so people in the restaurant. Said he ‘could not find me’.Altogether a less than pleasant experience.Terry Turrington29/4/22

Went to the Kingslodge for lunch. We love this place and were really looking forward to returning for the fist time since COVID.We noticed that the prices had jumped up considerably, but that wasn't an issue at all as the quality was always excellent when we have been previously.Sadly, the food quality fell way short on this occasion.My food was OK but not to the level of the prices charged.My other half ordered the Avacado Ceaser Salad with Anchovies. When it arrives there was no Ceaser dressing and there were only 2 Anchovies which seemed a little light for a large salad bowl.The waiting staff were very apologetic and took it back to the kitchen to get sorted.It was returned with a tiny drizzle of dressing and still only 2 Anchovies. So basically we paid £13 for a bowl full of lettuce a few slices of Avacado and 2 Anchovies.Really do hope this was just a bad hair day for the chef as we would love to be able to have the great quality back as it used to be.With those levels of prices the quality needs to be better than we experienced on this visit.

Lovely hotel. The room we had was a bit small but you can upgrade, very friendly staff, nice breakfast and only ten minutes walk from the centre of town.

Went for a family Sunday lunch at Easter. Lovely venue, excellent service and great food. Great value. We will definatly go again.

This pub / Inn was found by chance, after walking under one if the arches of the Durham viaduct. There is a sign on a wall with an arrow directing you towards the 'Best pub in Durham 2019'. We felt it was worth a visit even if we didn't have a lot of time. I am so glad we did. A roaring fire greeted us as did very friendly bar staff and the internal decor was very comfortable. It is definitely a place for long relaxing lunches by the fire. Beer choice was limited, although 'Atlantic Ale' was on tap. Definitely worth a trip off the beaten track when visiting Durham. Overnight packages are available and having had a lookat the menu, I will be certainly be booking something before too long 😊

Lovely hotel with nice staffRoom was average but nice and clean, it lacked any sort of a table and chair and the bed although comfy was tiny 4'6.Evening meal was good but expensive for what you get.Breakfast was OK but not much on plate for full English. On last day was a reduced menu as it had been a busy weekend apparently.It felt to me as if they only just did enough.

The venue is delightful. The staff were good. The food was awful. I had the Pan-Fried Pheasant, which was as tough as my shoe leather. It was unpleasant tasting mash of some sort not a blue cheese potato cake. The Broccoli and runner beans were cold. There was a drizzle of gravy and if it blackberry, it had me fooled. All this for £16.00. I don't think one person within the party of 15 were satisfied with their food. granted they gave 20% as an apology. But you cannot ask people to pre-order (to give the so-called chef perparation time) and deliver such poo quality. I have seen good reviews, so I am guessing they had a serious chef issue. Also only on choice of ale. I give it three stars for the venue and zero for the food. Won't be going again in a hurry.

We waited ages for our food - they told us there was a delay when ordering but tables which had arrived after us were being served. When we asked, we’d clearly been overlooked as they said they’d had to cook more chicken. My daughter ordered the chicken which when it came was not cut from a bird, probably a chicken breast which had been cooked separately. It was burned and she said it tasted awful - we also had to ask for stuffing which was meant to be part of the dish. Meals were said to be served with buttered vegetables, roasted roots and cauliflower cheese. There were no roasted vegetables and no cauliflower cheese. My beef dinner was quite tasteless but my husband had a burger which he said was nice. Nobody came until we were almost finished to ask if all was ok - by then it was too late. The girl we spoke to gave us a drink on the house because the food was late and took one of the meals off our bill. At least they made some effort to put it right but a lovely Sunday lunch would have been much better experience. My daughter works very long hours and this was her first Sunday off for a long time and not the experience we wanted. Other tables around us were also complaining. We will not return!

Six of us went for our annual Christmas night out for the first time in two years as Covid-19 prevented it last year. As there had been a change in government advice the place wasn’t busy when we got there just before our 7.30 booking. We were shown to our seats and before everyone had got a drink we were presented with our starters. At best they were just warm, and at worst they were just warm but burnt to the point of being inedible and had to be replaced. We asked for a break before getting our main courses and those having steak said how they wanted them to be cooked - one medium rare and one medium. After about 20 minutes we were going to ask for our meals to be prepared but at that point we were asked if we were ready for our meals. We said yes, thinking that the steaks would have to be cooked and the other meals plated. Wrong! Within 30 seconds our meals were in front of us. The medium steak was medium rare, the turkey dinners were crisp through being left under a lamp. I won’t bore anyone with the desserts, but I do know that none of us will eat there again.Truly the worst meal ever. Avoid at all costs.
