The Merchants Tavern in Newcastle upon Tyne

Took the opportunity to do some admin for work whilst eating lunch today instead of using my car as my office. Friendly service, lovely fish finger butty (proper fish in batter, not the rectangle ones from a box), best chips I've had in a while and a cold drink - excellent value. Will definitely do this again.

Has definitely changed hand's since the Lockdowns, all different staff & Menu.Called into today for drinks & food, place was quite busy but managed to get a table.Great selection of Beer's, ordered food, Starter & a Main which both were meh!!! tasteless & unappetising, went up to Bar to order Desert but no joy,,, No Crumble or Ice Cream Brownie,,,really?The lass with the tattoo on her neck came to take our plates away & never said a word, no, how was your meal or was everything alright, She couldn't even crack a smile, I could name 1 thing that might put a smile on her face but there again I very much doubt it.She's a proper Penguin 🐧 on an Ice Berg..A Smile goes a Long Away, but she'll probably charge you for 1..Absolutely No Comparison to what this place used to be like, fair to say the Merchants have had my last few Quid..Don't waste your time or Money..

Lovely Sunday Lunch in a great location by the Marina. Family enjoyed the chicken / pork. I have the vegi option - roast red peppers stuffed with couscus - very nice, especially good getting the traditional yorkshire pud, roast potaties and veg with it!

Had the most amazing experience at the Merchants Tavern. I booked afternoon tea for my mams 60th birthday. Jenna was so helpful and friendly. Nothing was a problem.The food was delicious and the staff were very friendly and kept us topped up on drinks too!Can't recommend it enoughThank you so much!

This is now a great pub. Lovely helpful staff, good atmosphere and fab food. We really enjoy the Sunday lunch here however we had (off the specials menu) the chicken marsala dirty fries through the week and they were yummy. The rice pud was very good too. Thanks to everyone who works there.

Just had a lovely Sunday lunch at the merchants tavern. I had the chicken and my wife had the pork. Both served with roast and mashed potatoes, a large Yorkshire pudding, carrot and swede mash and cauliflower cheese. Lovely location next to the river, lovely staff and the pub is immaculate and clean. Really chilled atmosphere and served with our lunch within a few minutes of ordering. They also had a starters and dessert menu for any big eaters. Really large portion of dinner and a jug of extra gravy came as standard. Definitely be returning. 👍

I don't like leaving bad reviews but we were so disappointed when we came for Sunday lunch on 26/09. We all thought the young waiter was absolutely lovely - he was very chatty with fantastic customer service! However, although it was almost completely empty when we arrived, the manager(?) was quite cold and put us off from ordering by telling us there would be a massive wait - we didn't feel welcome at all. Then they came out and told us we could order - it was all quite confusing. The food came after a while. The beef was well-cooked but the Yorkshires were stone cold. We got one tiny plate of vegetables between four, which amounted to one piece of broccoli and cauliflower and a small spoon of swede and cabbage each!! We asked for another dish of vegetables but the kitchen refused. My friend's gammon was SERIOUSLY raw - completely undercooked, a genuine health and safety concern! After drawing attention to this we got a refund for the gammon even though the kitchen claimed it 'was cooked'. Overall the experience was very disappointing. All the wait staff were friendly and very obliging, but we left feeling rather let-down by the management and our overall experience.

Crumbed Sea Bass was simply amazing, best food I have had for a long time. Already planning a return trip.Went back the following week, Crumbed Salmon in the menu this time. Another fab and filling meal with a great pint. Wife and daughter had the Sunday beef dinner which was the same. Midweek lunch next time.
