Segedunum was a Roman fort at modern-day Wallsend, North Tyneside in North East England. The fort lay at the eastern end of Hadrian's Wall near the banks of the River Tyne, forming the easternmost portion of the wall. It was in use as a garrison for approximately 300 years, from around 122 AD, almost up to 400AD.

Most excellent museum where hours fly by, with a variety of hands-on exhibits for most ages. Only niggle would be the videos which are aimed at a broad range of ages and appear rather slow and simplistic. Excellent explanation of how the wall was built up.Temporary issue with replica bathhouse which needs roof and plaster repairs.Suggested improvement would be to separate the parts on Romans, coal mining and ship building to individual areas and not mix them up.

Brilliant to take the kids to help them learn more about the Romans. There are lots of activities and tasks to keep the kids entertained and busy. Just wish the baths were open to see them

We had a morning out at Segedunum during half term. Its right next to Wallsend which is handy for those using public transport. If driving, there is a good sized car park at the museum. Children go free which is pretty fantastic. Adult ticket is cheap too. Lots to see and look at. Theres plenty of space upstairs to sit and eat your packed lunch. Unfortunately no cafe which is a shame but you can buy drinks and treats at the front desk. Lovely gift shop with some fabulous books and nice souvenirs to choose from. Staff are enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Facilities nice and clean. During the holidays they have craft activities availiable on a Monday. All round a lovely morning out with the children xx

We had a great few hours in this Museum. The young man on the desk was very informative, funny and helpful. View of the Tyne from the observation tower is a must do. Don't forget to visit the actual wall over the road in the far right corner. Worth a trudge up to visit this part.

Great place to visit if you like local history. I took my two boys, 6 and 1. My eldest loved it, there were lots of interactive exhibits and he enjoyed learning about the fort and Hadrian's Wall. The tower provides an amazing view of the Tyne. The bath house wasn't open, which was a shame but there was a small play area for both of my boys to enjoy. I wasn't stung at the gift shop, which was very reasonably priced. There was food and hot drinks on offer, which we didn't try. It was very easy to get around with a push chair, even on the outdoor site which hosts the foundations for the fort. A good few hours can be spent here.

Impressive investment in facilities such as the viewpoint reached by lift and the museum. This is the end of the wall and for those walking the wall you have to visit.Although the reality is that nothing really remains of the fort and you need to leave a lot to the imagination, unlike a site such as Housesteads. For completists only.

The viewing tower gives you a good bird's-eye view of what are now just the foundations of this fort. If you don't want to climb the stairs, the lift has just reopened. Much of the original stone has been removed over the centuries but the mortared stone blocks are the original Roman foundations. The missing stone has been replaced by kerbstones and cobbles so you can appreciate the full layout of the fort. The museum contains some Roman artifacts, aswell as displays to give you an idea of what Roman life was like. A little cinema has Actors playing different characters describing their life eg Centurian, Slave, Wife etc.Don't miss the gallery in the section of the building housing the caffe. The gallery has enlarged backlit photographs of the fine detail on 20 artifacts currently displayed in the museums collection.Parking is free; a few backpackers were starting their full length walk of Hadrian's wall from this point when I was there.

Great place to start or finish the walk. Or just soak up some Roman and Newcastle heritage. Great to see the views of Wallsend. Very helpful staff. Decent shop.
