Great Wall in Conwy

Fascinating to see the complete wall around the town, loved the house in the wall. Great views well worth a visit.

The best way to see Conwy. Generally clear route and lovely views, especially over the bay. There's a section by the harbour which is a dead end but a great viewpoint - if you follow the arrows which take you on the route, then you miss it, so make sure you go that way!

The medieval walls of Conwy were built between 1283 and 1287 after the foundation of Conwy by Edward I. The walls are 1.3km long and include 21 towers and three gate houses as well as integrating the large castle.The walls were built at the same time as the castle by master mason James of St George, using huge numbers of seasonal labourers brought over from England. Tudor rule in the 15th and 16th centuries eased hostilities between England and Wales and the defensive purpose of the town walls waned.The development of road and rail in the 19th century largely spared the walls and today they stand as part of the larger Castles and Town Walls of King Edward in Gwynedd UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Lovely walk along the town walls and great views of the town, castle and surrounding areas.The first two entrances are separate to the main part and closes fairly early but the majority appears to be open all the time which allows for you to go later when it's less busy and get sunset views. The best entrance to get the most walk is the railway entrance which is on the opposite side of the station to the town square.Its not difficult of a walk but would not recommend to people with movement difficulty as there are steep steps to get on, throughout and to get off.

There are plenty of spectacular places in Britain (Londonderry, Chichester, Chester, York, etc.) and the rest of the world where you can scale old city walls that are more intact than Conwy's but I can't think of many that are so iconic - with the view of the castle and walls with its 21 (if I recall correctly) towers looming over the river Conwy - that have UNESCO World Heritage listing. In fact the castles of Beaumaris and Harlech (largely the work of the greatest military engineer of the time, James of St George) and the fortified complex of Caernarfon (along with Conwy) (all located in the former principality of Gwynedd) are all extremely well-preserved monuments and are examples of the colonization and defence works carried out throughout the reign of Edward I (1272–1307) and the military architecture of the time and are part of that listing. So it beggers belief that one reviewer here compares what Conwy has, unfavourably, to the Great Wall, though I doubt the reviewer has visited the latter (or many other walled monuments) due to the uncultured nature of the comment. The castle is currently closed (Covid restrictions) but you get a real feel of the significance of this structure by a simple stroll along the stunning 1.2km aerial walkway that are these walls. One way round with some quite low handrails in places, don't do it in your stilettos!

Incredibly impressive complete ring of walls, dating from the 13th century. There is a section that is too unsafe for walking on, but you can walk most of the way around, as long as you're reasonably mobile and fit. The views are fantastic and this really feels like touching history.

Free to enter and easy to explore. It takes perhaps 20 minutes to walk the full length of the walls. Great views of the Castle, Bay and City Center.

Really cool history with these walls surrounding the town. At times the walk was quite steep. Also, I will say, it was a bit confusing on the walls nearest the castle (southwest). They seemed to end but then you walked a few blocks and picked back up. Anyways, I would definitely do this if in the city for a visit. 30 minutes max.
