The Australia Inn in Gwynedd

It's my favourite pub in Porthmadog. Usually very good but very variable in terms of how busy it is and also the beer quality. The beer is usually excellent, but inexperienced (?) staff means I've been served, and have refused, cloudy pints, clearly the end of the barrel, on more than one occasion.

We absolutely loved this pub , the staff were very helpful , and welcoming and friendly.

2 visits here during the week. Liked the food , friendly and helpful staff and of course Purple Moose, you can`t beat a visit to the Darkside.

Nice bright atmosphere. Good range of beverages. Ordered food.. wanted the garlic mushrooms but had run out so had the straps of steak. Could had done with some rustic bread or something to round it off as it had a dipping sauce and a marmalade with it. The steak was tender. For mains,we opted for the lamb shank. Again they had ran out of potatoes so had to have chips. The shank was nicely cooked and fell off the bone. Needed another veg to go with the peas. Also the gravey was very thin. Needed thickening up a bit. In all an ok dish at a reasonable price. 👌

When I was in Porthmadog (April 2022) The Australia was the easiest eatery to spot. It's right on the High Street by the harbour and station. This means it's always going to be popular, especially around 6 - 8 in the evening. If you're prepared to wait, though, you won't be disappointed. I had a lamb steak. It was tender and delicious! My companion was also satisfied, but I can't remember what they had. The atmosphere is informal. The decor is faux industrial a la hipster. The chairs are amazing, no chance of anybody ever throwing one, they weigh a ton! If anybody did think of trying, it would likely be because they had been drinking Navigator, the strongest of the pub's range of craft beers. It's probably best to drink that one in halves, but the elderflower beer is wonderful and safe to indulge oneself in. All the beers here are locally brewed by Purple Moose, but don't despair, they also do a very drinkable lager! The staff were young, polite and able to advise on the menu. Music was indie, mainly 80s and 90s when we were there, not so loud as to prevent eavesdropping on the next table, but enough to provide a comfortable background ambience. Informal, friendly, delicious.

Great food, great grog, great service, what's not to like! There is a menu that caters for all tastes, with excellent GF options (they can tailor), which is unusual so a big thumbs up there. A wide selection of ales can also be had owing to this being the Tap for the local Purple Moose Brewery. They are all excellent ales. I had a really pleasant stop here with my 3 kids and will certainly be back!

Firstly, the beer in the place was great, especially the Elderflower Ale which is pure nectar. However, from our experience when food is being served its a nightmare to get a table. We were in town for a week and 3 days in a row trying could not get a table even for a single drink, there is also a no booking policy with it being first come first serve. Not the bars fault per say of our experience but be warned that you are likely to never be able to enjoy this place if you have a family and are expecting to be seated between 5-8 ish unless your very lucky! Will have to settle for a take out from the shop down the road which was a little disappointing for a holiday trip.

Looking at all these v good reviews I’m thinking there must be another The Australia bar in Porthmadog.The one we went into was shocking at best.The service was poor, and the food quality….wouldn’t even call it pub food. The lasagne was a bowl of melted cheese - not even edible.Off to find this other bar in Porthmadog called The Australia because clearly we went into the wrong one given all the superb reviews 😂 😝

Went for lunch while visiting Porthmadog as we wanted somewhere dog friendly and with good ales! Food was great and the selection of Purple Moose ales was excellent! The staff were friendly and it was good to see a pub pretty busy on a Friday lunchtime in early February. Highly recommend and we'll definitely be returning.

They say dont judge a book by its cover, well it is definately true about 'The Australia,' its unasuming front only increases the enjoyment once inside.The staff at 'The Australia' were amazing. Having arrived after a really long drive and just as the kitchens were closing, they stayed behind to accomodate us all, including Sherlock (our GSD). Really friendly and brilliant customer service.The food was amazing, freshly made and full of flavour. The real ale was good and reasonably priced.The resterant itself is really lively and set up for modern families with near all tables having a charging station for the kids electronic devices. The toilets were clean, tidy and the pipework taps were a definate talking point.I would definately return to The Australia again.
