Hungry Horse - The Turf Tavern in Carlisle

Poor 'Welcome', no welcome, and told immediately an area we had no interest in was "closed"???Told our 'Host' we had booking for 5... shown to a table for 4.We just moved to a free table for 6.We had to go to Bar for drinks and 'order' so still not experienced any positive 'customer service' after 10 minutes.The ultra-high Calorific Menu (Average 1250Cals ?) did have hidden/not obvious lower calorie options (ie substitute salad for chips).5 Mains arrived in reasonable time though 'delivery' was very matter of fact.Further refreshements and 2 'Sweets' ordered again Calories off-the-scale.One of the sweets was not as ordered (why?).Changed without apology (just "Oh") though also without question - our Service 'highlight'?My Main of Scampi & Salad was OK... as was the lemon wedge.Our bills (x2), everything paid for in advance at our 2 visits to the Bar, amounted to over £70.00.Quality, VFM & Service...Below Average.Could we recommend... probably not...?

Booked for a large table were told you can just have that area. Starters were OK and enjoyed but mains were a let down with most being left. Shame as when we went over Christmas the food was good. Unfortunately will not be returning.

Good food, they refunded the car parking cost by taking it off the bill. Friendly service

Lovely place only ate as driving not sure on range of drinks only had lemonade. Food was Nice sort of thing you expect from a chain of pubs. Reasonably priced.

The turf tavern has friendly staff, who will be helpful if asked anything. The food is quite cheap with all their offers. The steak is a bit chewy and small and some other meat eg gammon a little bit chewy and their eggs are very small, but at least free range. Family friendly.

Very good straight forward pub food. Clean and good service from staff. Would definitely go back if we are passing again.

Went to a gig at the Sands Centre and called in at the Turf at a busy time.We hadn't booked a table but staff were polite,friendly and helpful and sorted a table for us straight away.Food was very good and exactly as described. Pricing was very reasonable.The service was excellent and very efficient. All areas were clean and tidy including the toilets. We had driven 3 hours from North Wales and it a great find. If we were local,it would be our local!

Great selection of drinks, plenty of outdoor seating for the hot sunny Bank holiday weather and staff (despite being very busy) were consistently pleasant 😊 My only gripe was the missing bacon on our loaded fries.

Classic Hungry Horse / Greene King pub. Good grub and range of drinks for a reasonable price, with some sort of offer on every day.Nice decor and friendly staff, with pretty quick service. The car park is a good size, with a beer garden too.
