String of Horses Restaurant and Bar in Carlisle

Amazing 2 night break! Upon entering the inn there was an open fire blasting out heat! Friendly staff! Amazing Sunday dinner and pudding! The room was great, very clean, all the essentials. The breakfast was superb, the lady serving us really went above and beyond! Even preparing a fruit platter the next day for my wife! She was also very helpful and knowledgeable with the surroundings and amenities! Would 100% recommend and stay here again! Thanks to all the staff! Other bonuses were free WiFi and parking.

Lovely place, but it was totally lifeless on a Saturday evening.At £4.50 a pint, £8 for starters and £17 for a main course, you can see why.I wonder if they've thought that they might make more money if they reduced their prices.Some of the food reviews are good but, given some of the others, I won't be taking the risk.

Had the steak whick was cooked to perfection along with everything else on the plate. Good beer and friendly staff. 10/10

Drinks & food expensive, food was very nice cooked fresh to order. Breakfast was lovely spoilt for choice again cooked to order. Place itself is lovely, spotlessly clean, proper oldie world with lovely fires. Staff friendly, chatty , room lovely & clean. Only stayed 2 nights but we had clean towels each day .I would have given it 5 star but cost of food & drink let it down

and my partner came here, we sat down with our drinks at a table with no reservation sign on as there was 2 tables that had them, after starting our drinks some grumpy women who must be manager/owner came over and asked us to move as the table just got reserved, 5 minutes later a group of four came in and got asked what table they wanted to sit in the one we were sat in or a different one. To top it of we ordered a drink before we left and she came running over typing on the machine and swear we got ripped off. Saw lots of full plates going back so don't be mislead by all the pictures of what looks like good food. Will definitely not be visiting this place again definitely worst place I have been to in a very long time, learn how to treat your customers, BTW both bar men were very nice and great with customers maybe they should teach her a thing or to.

Very traditional Country Inn - comfortable, good beers, menu a bit limited - it would have been nice to relax in the lounge in front of the log fire - we were told it gets too hot if they light it !!

Amazing. The room was fantastic. Booked last minute as a family of 4. The hosts are lovely and the food is beautiful. Will recommend and will definately be back.

Excellent hospitality, they couldn't do enough for us. Food and service 10 out of 10. Definitely recommend staying at String of Horses, we wouldn't hesitate going back.

Little choice especially for older children, no adaptation of menu allowed, (just extra chips to child meal). Management's response - 'company policy not to stray from menu'. Will not return, make sure you check menu before booking.

A hidden away little gem. Cask ales as a fine starter. Followed by a superb duck main course. My wife had the sea bass chased with a g&t from the extensive range of gins. Lovely village pub immaculately kept with an excellent chef.
