Where is Porta?

🏠 140 Northgate St, Chester CH1 2HT

"The aim at Porta is to keep things really simple. A relaxed, totally informal environment inspired by the tiniest independent tapas bars of Barcelona and Madrid. Lots of bar stools and casual tables create a busy, buzzing atmosphere. The menu is enthusiastically Iberian, representing many tapas bar classics - all of which are handmade in-house. No need to book, just come along and grab a space. Simply put, Porta is the kind of place to relax in – unpretentious and comfortable with good music, beer, wine and food. We do 𝗡𝗢𝗧 take bookings. Walk ins only."

Found this place on Google maps as we were visiting Chester on Saturday afternoon and so glad we did 😀. We got there just after 4 o'clock and managed to get the last table after that they were turning people away so pick the time of your visit wisley. We had already decided we were going to have a jug of sangria and six dishes split between meat 🍖, fish 🐟, bread 🍞 and potatoes 🥔 and O M G , the taste of the food was exceptional, the best we have tasted 😋 yet, so order more bread because I was wiping the dishes clean to get as much out as I could 😋. Many thanks to the staff at Porta because it was truly an amazing visit 😀 😋.

Great food, excellent staff and a glorious location. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening at Porta with some of the dishes really hitting the spot. The tortilla was exceptional, as were the croquetas and the romesco broccoli. A great buzz about the place, just like any great tapas bar should have. We will be back again.

Me and my partner went one Thursday evening. Staff were lovely and helpful. We've been wanting to try here for a while- now We've been we probably wouldn't go back, didn't rate it much!Food arrived quickly, some dishes didn't seem too fresh. Some dishes were tastyothers were lacking flavour and some had far too much oil. Personally We've had tastier tapas in Hoylake. (Can see my review on my profile)Lovely area with great character but I personally wouldn't recommend.

Cracking food, every dish was good although the chicken skewers could do with less salt.Staff were very good.No bookings here, walk in only which I liked. Ambiance and buzz was better as a result.

Food is delicious every time I've been. It's great that the dishes come out a different times so you don't get too full. The staff are so friendly too, I keep going back!

Be warned. You will wait twice the length they tell you! Then, in our case taken to a narrow bench facing a wall in dining area out the back, unable to face each other and supposed to eat and chat. No problem in sitting on a bar stool, but I do like to look at the person I’m dining with! I called during the day and asked what would be the chances of dining that day. No problem the lady told me, I said I didn’t want to queue outside. She said no it’ll be fine if we came just after 7 we shouldn’t have a problem getting a table so we didn’t book anywhere else. Wrong. Arrived a long queue. Told we would queue 20 mins max. Rain billowing around the awning. 40 mins later!!! taken to uncomfortable dining area out the back that looks nothing like the area you admire through the window. We left. As we walked past the queue we could hear the same line “2 people, 20 min max wait” .

Amazing food and wonderful staff! We went on a Saturday evening and had to wait about 20 minutes but were able to order drinks whilst we waited and stood at the bar. Staff were really friendly and food was extremely good, fantastic experience and would recommend to everyone!

Just want to say a massive thank you to Vicki and the chefs at Porta for making me feel welcome and going above and beyond to make sure the food was amazing (and free of nuts). They have a great new set up too so there’s much more space inside. Best tapas outside of Spain!

Very nice tapas restaurant! Very quaint and cosy! You cannot book, and there was a wait when we visited (around 7:45pm on a Friday night). Staff told us our wait would be 30 minutes and we were seated within that time, so bonus.Food was amazing, staff were really helpful to advise us on what we should choose given that my partner does not eat beef. I was on Estrella but had a couple of glasses of Sangria, which was very nice.If you're in Chester and fancy eating tapas then I highly recommend visiting Porta. You will not be disappointed. Well worth the wait (if there is one) and a jug of Sangria paired with your food is a very wise choice!Thank you so much to the Porta staff for a nice and enjoyable experience, as well as an amazing meal!

A little gem tucked away at the end of the street. Nice relaxed and cosy atmosphere and the food was amazing, super tasty and very reasonably priced. The aubergine tortilla special was incredible! We were slightly hungover and the waitress could tell we were suffering and went the extra mile to look after us with her amazing service, I think her name was Izzy from looking at the receipt she was a credit to the place. We have another one close to our house so we will 100% try this one as well! Highly recommended!
