Hodgson's Chippy in Lancaster

The fish was more like a whale lol. But really delicious. The mushy peas were perfect just the way I like them. Very clean and hygienic.

Short review: Must visit fish & chip in Lancashire, UK. Highly recommended.Detailed review:On our March 2022 trip to Lancaster, Hodgson’s chippy was on our to-do list. It is a multiple award winning chippy, especially at the start of the millennium. We got to know about this place when we were aimlessly flipping across a book titled, ‘Make the most of your time in Britain’ Chapter 111: Tracking down the perfect chippy in Lancashire. This accidental browsing in a way encouraged us to plan our trip to the sleepy county town of Lancaster.Must say, we were impressed by this fryer. Open from noon to 8pm on all days besides Sunday, one could order their meal online with the website being very user friendly. We did not use the app, hence cannot comment. There is no dine in option & no delivery. It is a small brown- bricked, curb side pickup located close to the Royal Lancaster Infirmary.When you reach the chippy, you are handed a device which bleeps/startles you once your meal is ready. In addition to the specials board, there is a small panel which states the origin & variety of the potato and where the cod was caught.The chips, best consumed hot, are giant finger-thick, chunky, creamy and not at all greasy. While writing this review, my mouth has suddenly started salivating, reminiscing about the crunchy breaded haddock and scampi and the mind blowing tartare sauce. The battered cod was tasty and good in its own league, but in a way pales in comparison to the above. Needless to say, the fish was extremely fresh, the food was well seasoned & the entire experience was worth the visit. I am still drooling and tempted to drive up to Lancaster and relive this feast. Ah…the power of a great meal!

A friend told me this chippy shop was the best in Lancaster, the fish and chips are ok, but definitely the steak pie and tartare sauce it’s the best in Lancaster.

Honestly, after working in a chippy myself I wasn’t impressed by the quality of the chips I got. For the price and the way people rant and rave about how good this chippy is I ended up giving my portion to someone else! Even with the curry sauce they were powdery and flavourless :( I asked for just salt and couldn’t taste a grain anywhere on my chips… quite disappointing really

Great chips and pie, the wait for fresh items was worth it. Price is not the cheapest. Parking was good.

Great chippy, food always fresh and staff are friendly and polite. You are given a device to let you know when the food is ready, a nice touch which makes me, as a vulnerable person, very comfortable here within the COVID-19 pandemic. Will definitely be back!

Best fish and chips in the country. Absolutely fantastic service and I was surprised how well organised they were to keep us safe during this pandemic. If I could give it 10 stars I would.

First to push in is served first, not very covid friendly. Highly unimpressed. EDIT: Staff lacked etiquette, didn't acknowledge customers presence, which led to queue jumping. After speaking with the owner(in response to his outright lies in his reply) he tried to ask me to give them a second chance, which I explained due to the covid issues I couldn't. His response was a threat to spread this review over social media. I have never experienced anything like it. Definitely won't be visiting again.

Good fish n chips. Could be great if they remembered to add salt and vinegar as asked 🤷
