Poppi Red in South Lakeland

We arrived here at 3pm after a long bike ride to get some takaway cake as Google Maps says it shuts at 4:30. We were just about to walk in and a lady came out and put the cafe closed sign out, so I asked oh are you shut, "yes we are" seemed a bit strange and I would of expected something like..."oh well we are but what is it you are wanting" etc but obviously they'd had a bad day or just don't have any customer service skills. I gave her the benefit of the doubt that she thought I meant we were eating in, so went in and asked are you shut for takeaway as well? "We can do drinks but not food" "you can't do takeaway cakes"..."no we can't", must very difficult cutting cakes at 3pm🤣. Very strange bearing in mind there were lots of people still eating inside and outside🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️Anyway here's my 100% honest review and I wasn't impressed at all!

Salads were superb and cakes enjoyed by all as well. The breakfast options on the menu looked great too! Will be back.

There are two types of cooked breakfasts...... Poppy Red's cooked breakfast is really nice. Good quality produce, no rubbish cheap sausages, no tin mushrooms and cheap beans. To top it off the perfect cappuccino. Ready to start our day. Thank you

We tried to go here for breakfast and there was a board outside saying that it was closed unless you were a resident (which is not mentioned anywhere on the website.) We went inside to ask as there were only 2 people sat in the corner and they refused to even serve us a coffee. Pathetic example of customer service, considering they rely on tourists for survival. Don't bother going as there are other nice places in the area where you are welcome!!

I had a horrible experience at Poppi Red this morning. Tried to order coffee and cake for myself and my husband and was very rudely told they were closed despite being full of customers. Both the lady on the counter and a red faced waitress with a tray treated me with great disdain and virtually threw me out with no apology or explanation other than ' there's a sign outside that says we're closed' ! At 11.30 am on a busy bank holiday Monday. I was very upset and have never been treated so rudely. It's such a shame the cakes looked delicious and it's a lively venue. But we won't be going again.

Massively over priced ordered 3 full breakfasts at £10 each! The eggs were burned and the bacon was rock hard! The sausage and beans was ok. very disappointed won’t be returning unfortunately.

We’re still here enjoying our second nights stay at The Hive at Poppi Red. This is truly a place to relax. We have the luxury of staying in the newly renovated apartment room complete with lounge area, en suite shower room, copper bath and luxurious bedroom! The furnishings are exquisite! The attention to detail that has gone into this simply amaze me. This isn’t just a hotel room this is a comfortable and pristine home from home with bells on top. The hosts are super helpful, nothing is too much trouble although they have pre thought of everything we could possible need. We will 100% be back as the bar has been raised so high I would hate to be disappointed by going anywhere else.

It's all about the quality! Great local produce and really tasty cooking (I had the chili nachos... delicious) lovely staff, perfect pit stop! Look forward to coming back here.

Tasty food and super friendly staff - we messed up our own order, and they swapped the meals without a problem. Nice combination shop/cafe which is dog friendly too. Frittata, chili beef with nachos, and panini were all excellent.

Great to go somewhere that you get coffee that is hot, tastes good & is served in a mug rather than a little cup! We had a large cheese scone & sausage roll which were good.The only down side was the customer seating.....the uncomfortable garden furniture inside the cafe.
