The British Raj in South Lakeland

The British Raj has been taken over by the same guys who run Aroma in Grange over sands. It's also now been renamed "Aroma"! We had our first takeaway from Aroma Ulverston since their rebrand and we were very happy with the service and quality of food. The menu itself has changed, with some new dishes included. I can highly recommend the Naga Special, which has a smokey heat without burning too much, and the chilli masala. The meat was tender and the pilau rice delicious.At 6pm on a super-Sunday night, the restaurant was packed but we were still able to pick up our food within 20 mins of ordering.Great start, hopefully we'll continue to be impressed by the new guys in town 👍

Just got the worst takeout ever, let's start with the korma/ curry. What have i just eaten it was slop on a plate, the popadoms were stale and the rice was not tasty at all. Onion bhaji awful just a very disapointing meal. Will not be eating here again and I dare say they'll not be long in business if they serve this slop for much longer.

Disgraceful, need a visit from EHO. Telephone order delivered was a mess, meat was incredibly tough and sauces had a terrible after taste, dips with sides had obviously been stored for ages without any consideration for best before dates as 3 out of six were topped with mould. What appeared edible made most of us violently ill.

We have been to this restaurant a number of times in the past 8 years and it now seems to be under new ownership. What a massive improvement from the new modern decor to the standard of food! Even though the restaurant was busy, the service and food was outstanding. We have had indian food all over the UK and can say the food here has got to be one of the best Indian food we have ever had, great flavouring, good portion size and the price was fair. Hands downs the best Indian restaurant in the area. Will be back more often now.

Best curry we have had in years, was in Ulverston for just 4 days & went back twice. The Chicken Tikka Thawa was amazing. I would recommend to anyone. Now on line looking for the recipe. Thank-you for your warm welcome & lovely food Gail & Graham

Biryani was dry and bland, the butter chicken was slightly better. The place needs renovation REALLY badly, the carpet is disgusting and menu had cigarette marks on it. Not coming back until it improves.

Avoid! On my way to the lake district, my family (two adults and two children) went in for the first time for a '5 course happy meal', then we learnt poppdom, rice or nann each will count as one course. That was fine, we still sat in. Then We were left at our table unattended for long time for each course even I asked them they would say yes and still ignoring us. in the end, we could not wait any longer for our teas and coffees(5th course), so I went to the counter to pay the bill, then I found being overcharged for the drinks (king fisher beer). The manager made corrections and asked me if I am happy. I sad no as I still did not have my coffee. He did not appologize and never attempted to offer the coffee either. Very rude indeed,both staffs and the mamager. Food wise, i would rate it to the lower end of the currys houses I have been to. A lot of chill and roughly chopped onions, not very well balanced flavouring.

All food served on big dinner plates, which meant that there was no place on the table for actual plates. The plates were wet and made the table wet. The lamb was hard and inedible. My son ended up with curry spilt on him as he was struggling to eat without a dinner plate. Some of the waiters were nice but could not make up for how awful the experience was.

Got a take away from here on a Friday night and was impressed. My good was ready in 30 mins, hot and tasty when tucking in!

Unfortunately most other restaurants were closing by the time we got to Ulverston so we had no choice but to make our way to the British Raj. Went with very low expectations and this place failed to deliver to even those. Service was nice and friendly (except the grumpy manager), but the food was really not good at all and the miserly rice portions surprised me. Grubby and shabby interiors completed the evening.
