Went here about 2 years ago. Was by far the worst fish n chips I've ever had in my life. It was so bad, that it still gets brought up in conversation to this day. Didn't bother leaving a review bc it seemed petty. However after seeing the owner's responses to other bad reviews, it became an obligation to the people of the UK.If only he put as much effort into his cooking as he does into his Google review replies.Regards, Will

First time having a takeaway of Fish and Chips from The Old Smithy, Ambleside. Not something we usually do but after a walk on the fells we decided to treat ourselves. They were delicious - the fish was tasty, lovely flakes and the batter was light - the Chips were great too! The staff were friendly and polite and the food was cooked to order - I went at 5 30pm on a Sunday! Definitely recommend a visit if you are in the area 👍

We've been coming to Ambleside for nearly 20 years. Over the last few years we have switched from the "other" Fish and Chip shop in town, to The Old Smithy, so very glad we did. As they say in boxing it's all about levels. Old Smithy is top notch. Fresh fish, in beautiful batter, perfectly cooked chips and great service. We'll keep on coming back. Ignore the negative reviews, some angry nobheads out there these days!

I went here over the weekend and stood for over 15 minutes waiting to have my order taken whilst the staff completely ignored my presence. Whilst I waited, I observed a complete lack of organisation and a breakdown of communication between the staff. Thankfully I left and went across the street to the walnut, however my brothers father-in-law got food here and was awoken the next morning to a bout of diarrhea due to the greasy batter. Would not recommend.

LOVE the decor...makes me feel like upscale dining for hewrt warming comfort food like fish n chips. You cant beat ambience and that at-home feeling you get eating your favorite comfort food!!Im more privy to Cod but really, everytbing is good here and the fries are fresh and crispy just like the fish!!!Dont see myself going to any other fish and chip places now...this has set a standard that cannot be beaten!!!

Delicious, QUALITY food! Cooked/battered fresh to order, which unfortunately some very sad individuals cannot understand takes longer than alternatives cooked an hour ago left on a heater.Gary, I should imagine Kyle will have a hard time fitting that sausage up his rear considering he already managed to fit his head up there! You should be very proud of your business, don’t let some sap take that away from you.Best regards.

Called in for fish and chips just after it opened about 5pm, so they were freshly made. The chips were fine but the fish had the thickest batter I have ever encountered and not good.

Haven’t ate here yet but have heard great things about the batter and I enjoy Gary’s charm on here. It would be an honour for Big Gaz to reply to me on here in his usual complimentary fashion.

Looks like traditional fish n chip shop. Cooked poorly in sunflower oil. Fish is weedy in taste, falls to pieces seems like it’s from frozen. Awful. Batter is insipid colour and too thick and half cooked. Chips were average, but the saving grace of meal. Avoid this place

I was enticed by the £5 mini fish and chips takeaway, but once I entered I ordered a large fish and chips for £7.95 and I didn't regret it - big portions enough for two. Batter was light and flavourful, almost like tempura. The inner batter was kind of mushy which I liked because it was a contrast in texture. The fish was smooth and firm yet not dry. Really delicious, although slightly on the greasier side, especially the chips . Their pies were tasty and affordable.
