I have been coming to Blackpool for many years but have missed the last few years due to. Covid 19. The one thing about our trip from Kent was we were looking forward to our meal from the Happy Gathering which has always been top rate. However this time we ordered the meal and it took nearly an hour to arrive, when it did it was cold the driver was rude, the spare ribs were small and fatty, the boiled rice was reheated and overcooked, it was all clumped together and sticky. The pancake rolls were just bean shoots with one piece of meat in the one I had. The special chow mein is nothing special and the chicken in black bean sauce was weak and flavourless and the chicken was like rubber, the chips were like bullets.I have no idea what has gone on, but the service has dropped rapidly. My Mum called the take away and the woman that answered said to her, sorry you are not enjoying your meal but there is little we can do. Mum has said that we will never go there again. They had the cheek to put the price up but there was so much missing from the meals. The chow mein used to have king prawns in it but no more. This is a place that we will never visit again.

This "used" to be a great Chinese, but this is the second time that we have visited and this is the second time the food was greatly below standard. They practice false advertising, I ordered a special chow mein, which was hardly special at all, it consisted of mostly cheap bean shoots and some noodles there was a few small prawns in it and a couple of strands of beef, there is no king prawns, water chestnuts or anything that makes it special. They have a picture on the wall showing a special chow mein but it is NOTHING like you get. The price has increased and they ONLY accept cash. This time we had a chicken curry with chips. The curry was watery, far to many onion chunks, hardly any peas and very little chicken and what chicken there was was hard and chewy, needless to say it was not finished. The chips had been cooked and left to go cold and then reheated because as soon as they cooled they went hard. The prices have risen. But the quality and contents have dropped. I will not go back here again and my advice is stay away.

I have used this restaurant many years ago, it was always a Friday treat, the people who had it originally sold it on and since then it has gone down hill. I ordered a load of food this week and it was not cheap. The prawn toast was soggy, the curry was watery and had no vegatable in it apart from loads of onions. The sauce was the same as you can buy in a carton that you add water too.I have read a previous review on this site from someone else who had similar issues, when the happy gathering stated that they add broccoli in the curry, there was none in mine, so I guess they dont. My son's chips were heavily salted and despite the comments from the other review, they were definitely reheated. I owned a fish shop and the chips looked and tasted the same as if they had been fried, left to go cold and then fried again. The pancake rolls, of which we bought six, were the hottest thing in the bags, however they were full of beanshoots and very little else. If these meals were freshly cooked then I am astounded, they arrived luke warm and the curry sauce was starting to congeal. It is a shame because when my wife phoned and complained she was told that there was nothing they were prepared to do to rectify the situation. This would never have happened with the previous owners. This was a great take away before it was sold to the current owners. They also ONLY accept cash, in my opinion this is to avoid paying income tax and maybe the revenue department should look into this. Not worth the cost of buying from them, do yourself a favour and go a little further afield to get a better meal.

After years of ordering our takeaways tonight was the last straw. We were told our delivery would be a hour. After a hour and 15 mins I called to find out where our delivery was. I was told another 10 to 15 mins. After explaining this wasn’t acceptable I was told by the adorable lady on the phone how could she know what the delivery time could be! I told her she said a hour not a hour and a half. She said well It is busy and she didn’t know it would be longer than a hour. I said she shouldn’t say a hour if she didn’t actually know. She then proceeded to tell me I was being rude. I have ordered food from the Happy Gathering for 13 years, I will never order from here again no apology just an attitude. Disgusting

My favourite Chinese takeaway. The food is excellent, tasty and generous portions.I am lucky to live locally and always order a takeaway which arrives promptly politely and hot. I would have no hesitation to recommend this excellent Chinese takeaway for those who wish for a tasty good value Chinese meal.
