The Welldiggers Arms in Chichester

When we arrived, we were immediately asked if we had booked, although this was a reasonable question, it was said in an abrupt manner. It was a lovely sunny day, so we chose to sit in the garden and enjoy the stunning views. Although there appeared to be table service, we waited quite a while before having to return inside to place our order. There were other customers, but it wasn't particularly busy, with staff standing in the bar area. When our drinks order arrived the drinks were spilt over the table, the waitress was very apologetic, but a considerable amount of our drinks had been spilt and we had to ask for napkins to clean the table. The crab cake was small, the outside was very crisp and over cooked the centre was pleasant, but was overwhelmed by the horseradish sauce accompanying it, there were also tiny beetroot cubes, I am trying to recall if there should have been a salad garnish. The brisket burger with fries and halloumi and mushroom burger with sweet potato fries were very good. However, there was no salad or coleslaw as stated on the menu, which would have complemented the food. We were still charged full price for the meal even though there were items missing! I contacted The Welldiggers Arms regarding our experience, sadly they did not respond.

Recently visited this pub with my partner, the food was lovely and very tasty! Was very busy when we arrived, warm welcome with a prompt sitting. Plenty of food and drink choice and had local produce from near and far. The table we sat on had an incredible view of the South Downs which we were able to enjoy with the sun going down for the evening. Would happily visit again and would recommend to friends and family.

We really enjoyed our lunch here today looking out on the beautiful views! The staff were lovely and the food was great. Really enjoyed my lamb roast - very tasty and good quality. Would definitely return if I was in the area again.

Sadly this place is best avoided.1/ Communication to reserve a room was painful - it was nearly impossible to get someone to pick up the phone or reply to an email and everyone gave different information/prices.2/ The rooms are fine but expensive at £500 for 2 rooms for 1 night for what they are. The cushion on the chair for example was filthy and threadbare.3/ All rooms are very noisy so you will find it hard to get a good night’s sleep despite being in such a beautiful area. The back rooms with a view should be quieter than the ones on the busy road but the noisy hot tubs which make very loud whirring noises are very annoying and when in use, you can hear every word of your neighbours’ conversation as they are so close. This went on until after 11pm on our stay (with 3 small children).4/ Our 5 year old son’s favourite soft toys were inadvertently left in the sheets. We called later that day to ask for them to be put aside for us to collect. The abrupt manager claimed they were never found. As any parent knows, this has caused great upset and there has been a total lack of empathy or helpfulness on the part of the manager.5/ Breakfast was ok but the coffee was tepid.There are many more pleasant places to stay in the area for this price.

My boyfriend and I stayed here last night and it didn’t disappoint. The rooms were spotlessly clean and very homely. We would definitely recommend the room with the view and hot tub! We had breakfast and dinner during our stay and the food and service was amazing each time. We will definitely be back soon!

We as a family of 4 booked up for Sunday lunch. I read the reviews prior to coming which were not complimentary but honest assessments of the pub as it is. 2 Sunday roasts were cold and had to be sent back. Steak & Ale pudding merely heated up with minimal portion of mash and cabbage. Roasted cod was bland. Service was poor. Staff appeared to be disinterested. All in all a very poor experience. Prices are costly. Get your act together please.

Nice pub with friendly staff and good food, quite pricey. I had the fillet steak medium which came out well done and quite tough/chewy. Two mains and three non alcoholic drinks came to over £70 so be prepared to spend here.

Delicious food and excellent service in the most beautiful setting. Hosted my husband's birthday lunch for 17 adults with 3 kids at The Welldiggers Arms and it was fantastic. Matt, the manager, was very accommodating and requested that we pre-order as we were a large group. It made the lunch go so smoothly - a fantastic idea. Keira and Amy, our waitresses, were absolutely brilliant. Super efficient and helpful, and very friendly and welcoming too. They made our day. The view from the large windows over fields and rolling hills is really quite spectacular. I have not seen anything like it in the area. The pub has a good menu, with interesting choices and it was all delicious. They also have a very good selection of beers on tap - a must have for my husband! We will definitely be back.

Had late Sunday lunch here and was disappointed. Been a few weeks ago and enjoyed a decent size roast however today seemed like a child’s portion, not much beef and minimal veg. Being 16:00 I feel they were running low, disappointed given when we walked in one of the managers was tucking into a huge roast. The crumble was basic stewed apple with a hand full of crumble on top which was so hot it must have been microwaved. It came with thimble of custard. Sorry guys but standards seemed to have wondered.

Great location, good views, sunny space and friendly staff. Our 2 starters were mediocre and 2 mains really not very good, so overall not a place I would go back to eat. The menu is pricey so the standards should be higher. Shame.
