What a wonderful discovery. A real gen and the chef can cook up a storm!! Delicious doesn’t even come close to describing the delights we had for our evening meal. Every course was perfection. Beautifully presented and the perfect portion size. Excellence without arrogance. Could not fault it. We are in the village for a few days so hope to book again.

What a fantastic picturesque pub fantastic staff and locals. Opposite Jane Austins house. Beer was good food looked banging. Will be visiting with wifey and kids

By far the best pub in Hampshire. Great choice of beers and the food is really top notch. We had the scallop and prawn tortilini, followed by the duck and monkfish. I have to say it was outstanding. Great service too although the waitress nearly had my eyes out with her breasticles.

My partner and I have just moved to Alton. We thought we’d try what is technically our local after a long walk with the pooches. I don’t often write review especially negative ones but I’m more than happy to write this one. I managed a pub for 10 years so I’m obviously going to be (to my detriment) possibly overly critical at times, not that I ever complain however this place is an establishment to be proud of.From the second we walked in we were welcomed, all the staff were happy and the atmosphere was relaxed and friendly. The manager squeezed us in even though we hadn’t booked and the service was prompt and professional. Well mannered locals enjoying a pint at the bar (exactly as it should be) and all the other diners appeared perfectly content.I think the only delay was us trying to decide what to order from their menu which clearly suggests skilled and experienced chefs in their kitchen. This pub could accommodate a quick pint and a plate of fish and chips from the bar menu or a nice bottle of wine from their extensive wine selection whilst sharing cote de boeuf for a more special occasion.I’m smiling whilst writing this review because It’s not often a pub ticks all the boxes for me and this one happens to now be on my doorstep.A proper friendly local pub! From wellies to waistcoats everyone we saw enter was equally welcomed.Thank you and very well done 👏🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟

We were so disappointed today . We had a great experience in January with Sunday lunch . We booked for a late lunch at 2.30 today and nobody was expecting us regardless of email confirmation . We ordered at 2.45 and at 3.45 there was still no food and no communication about what as happening . We asked for tap water 3 times .The waiters and waitresses were lovey but very distracted with life and gave the impression they didn’t really want to be there .Eventually the food arrived ….never seen such a small dover sole in my life and for £25 this is not acceptable .The team were good and didn’t charge us for the food but come on ….please make sure the food is worth the cost and don’t disappoint us or anyone else . Money is tight and we all want to enjoy our experience .

Quite quiet at 1pm today. Sat in the smallish but sunny garden with a lovely pint of London Pride, which was middle priced in comparison to a few other local pubs. Staff very friendly!

Just had a sensational three course Sunday lunch! Food was sensational - beautifully presented, great quality and thoughtfully sourced. Atmosphere warm and welcoming, staff lovely. Also a great destination after a beautiful countryside stomp.

Really accommodating, we hadn't booked. Lovely bar lady. Outside loo has a library

A superb dining experience, really great service, lovely food, good ales on tap and a great setting. We were a couple with very few in the pub that night, treated to a complementary amuse Bouche, a delicious cauliflower cheese soup. My king prawns and then fish & chips were excellent, my wife’s halloumi fries, then whipped goats cheese with honeycomb and walnut salad was superb. Really good friendly, cheerful efficient service.

Wow, a pub in Alton that does an amuse bouche! Excellent food, professional and friendly staff and top notch grub! Strongly recommended the venison.
