We only called in for drink on our way back towards Penrith, tables were mostly reserved but lady got us one to sit at, as we weren't stopping to long, drinks fine, pub clean and fresh and friendly service.

Staying for the weekend at the B&B across the road. We had booked a table of six for Friday evening and a table of eight for the Saturday. We were contacted a couple of days before cancelling our booking for the Friday due to staff shortages. We were able to get booked into the White Horse at Scales three miles away, which was very, very good indeed. We however decided to go back to the Troutbeck Inn at about 20:30 so our drivers for the evening could have a drink. On walking in it was very quiet, had a very strong smell of fish and also had what looked liked locals camped out on bar stools across the bar, seemingly blocking the way to the bar. We were then told by the owner?/co-owner?/manager? that they had stopped serving drinks. I think the food we saw being cleared away was probably residents having being fed and we non residents had been cancelled for food service.Back outside I then called the White Horse and booked for eight next evening and cancelled the booking here - we had an excellent experience at the White Horse once again.Things you learn in hospitality (I know) - be kind to your customers - be friendly, don't alienate them whatever is being thrown at you - don't put up barriers - at least apologise if things are not working out. Stuff happens, but don't reject custom without extending a hand of friendship for the future!

We stopped off for a pint on are way to Keswick on a real ale trip. When we went in to the we where told there was not table's available and would have to seat outside witch was fine even though there was only about 6 people in the pub. 2 off us got a pint but there then refused to seve the rest of us.

Great Inn and a great location in the North Lakes, we stayed a couple of nights in a dog friendly room, it was very nicely presented, the food was excellent and Alan and Nicole are really nice and friendly hosts. A great location for Blencathra, Skiddaw, Mell Fells, Ulleswater. Just off the main A66 but we heard no traffic at all. We'll certainly be back when we need accommodation in the North Lakes. Cheers guys.

Visited here in May this year & it was brilliant- food, drinks, staff, atmosphere, everything. We were seated In the bar with our dogs who were given water & treats. Perfect! We visited again recently, in September & were sadly rather disappointed. My meal( sea trout) was beautifully cooked & delicious, as last visit. No complaints whatsoever. However, my partner had a very mediocre burger with fries which looked & tasted like microwave ones, surely not! He had loved his steak & ale pie last time & it was home cooking to perfection so was rather disappointed at the difference. We asked for passion fruit cheese cake from the menu, for dessert, as had it before & it was gorgeous to be told " We are not doing that now, as we can't get it!" Why not make it?!We asked if cheese & biscuits were available( not on the menu to be fair) told be told" We don't do that" & finally asked for coffee to be told " We are not doing coffees- machine broken!"The older lady who served us in the restaurant was very pleasant & friendly but completely unapologetic about the lack of certain things from the menu. Almost as though that was a good thing! Maybe it was a one off bad night & I have recommended this place to friends on the strength of our first visit which was faultless.

Delicious food reasonably priced, although we went middle of October and there wasn't a great deal of choice. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Dog friendly. I would recommend booking before you go to avoid disappointment

Lovely pub with friendly staff and good choice of food and beer. Well worth booking in advance for meals on weekend however they do a takeaway menu which isn't too bad. We opted for pizza which was a bit overpriced for what you got but not much choice within walking distance. Restaurant menu looked lovely. Would happily go again but book next time.

Takeaway was very confusing, you can't phone ahead (fair enough), the menu online doesn't match the current takeaway menu (less pizza, more other options like burgers), you then have to order with a table number but you are given a buzzer to collect your food from the bar which means the need for a table number when ordering is rendered pointless. Aside from that the staff were lovely and no a problem to deal with. I can only speak for the pizza we ordered when it came to the food, they weren't great, not worth the £12 each we paid for them if I'm honest but hey go I'll try the burger next time.

My partner and I are staying at the cottages at the back of the Inn "Little Mel" it's called. Very quaint and very well stocked for self catering. The Inn itself serves food and may I say " Superb food " ! Nice menu catering for all tastes. The fish with the chips I must say is the best we've tasted, the owners are lovely as are the staff. Highly recommend a visit, even a stay. Dog friendly as well.
