The Anchor Inn & Boating in Lewes

Very nice and pleasant place. Perfect for lunch if the weather is good. ☀️

Off-lead dog belonging to the pub attacked my on-lead puppy. They have an aggressive dog that’s allowed to walk freely around the beer garden - I would think twice about bringing children or animals to this “dog-friendly” place. My puppy has spent the rest of the day cowering whenever he sees anyone. Very sad experience for us and the other guests that witnessed the attack.

Friendly service and a solid roast dinner. I imagine the garden is lovely on a summer's day. However, the place itself is a little tired and needs some work, as does the drinks and food menu.

If I was rating the food alone it would be two stars and I'd feel generous. The 'roast' potatoes may have been in an oven at some stage.... The veggie roast was essentially a slab of butternut squash in pastry. Apparently the meat option was no better. It gets an extra star for cosiness.

Nice pub in a secluded area outside Lewes. The food was average pub food, but the local walks along the river are dog friendly and pretty. The pub itself is also dog friendly.

Outdoor sting area is quite nice. Bit overpriced and at 11:00 am hot drink service was off. Kayak rental service is nice future.

Last Sunday took some family friends who are not local and came down for the day , they wanted something rural and away from tourist spots in Brighton. The drive to The Anchor Inn was idyllic and weather too. Managed a walk in before lunch by the river , worked up an appetite and The Anchor Inn did not disappoint. The menu was varied and everyone loved what they ordered , generous portions and very friendly service . No need to pre book . We sat outdoors enjoying the weather and setting, the garden pub looked beautiful with all the different flowers out in full bloom , family friendly and very relaxing. Not rushed at all. After delicious lunch, we hired one of their boats for an hour , all very reasonable, and had a great time , the punters are friendly too. Returned to their garden pub area , sat by the river and ordered dessert . We all left having had a relaxing and highly enjoyable day out .

A slice of heaven, on a sunny day. Beautiful beer garden and terrace, on the river. Worth knowing about the back terrace if the gardens at the front are already full. Plenty of parking. Great food and drinks and friendly staff. You can paddle/ kayak here from Barcombe Mills Car Park (about 2.5 km), or you can walk along the path. There's no official 'getting out spot'/ jetty, and a lot of private land along the way with grazing cattle, so just be mindful of that.

Lovely, dog-friendly pub in a remote location. Really nice food, and they served from 11am - 5pm which was great when we were trying to find somewhere to eat out after the 2.30pm marker. I had the smoked salmon and creme fraiche baguette, which came with a dressed salad and tortilla chips. My partner had the goat's cheese and pear salad with walnuts (which he called mice brains!) and thoroughly enjoyed it. The pub is right by the river Ouse and you can hire a boat for only £7/hour! There were some public footpaths nearby which took us into cow fields, a nice way to top off the afternoon.
