Great Expections in Reading

Good value. Such friendly staff and a great breakfast, free with the room. Such an interesting pub. Will stay again.

The room was clean and comfortable, the towels a good size. On the negative there was only a shower gel, no shampoo. The noise from the pub below was really loud until gone midnight. Although the breakfast was nice it was not what was shown in the photos.

Great place to stay! Location is very close near the city and the service by the personnel was perfect! They made us feel at home. Highly recommend.

Last night was a works retirement bash at Great Expectations. We had an open bar, food and they organised a quiz for us. What a fab time! Emma, our host for the night could not do enough for a rowdy (and much rowdier at the end) group of around 30. Food was hearty and filling (huge portions) and drink ran all night.....until it ran out. Sorry about that! All staff were helpful and mostly friendly, smiley and cheerful. Thank you so much Emma and team, you made a good event EXCELLENT! Quiz was brill too - some very tough questions, not for the faint hearted. 🙂🙂🙂

Perhaps an unlucky evening, but we were served by a very young looking boy (who ironically ID’d us, 35) and from the moment he spoke to us, it was all a bit pear shaped, so to speak. He had the customer skills of a hungry lion who’s just spotted a baby gazelle. I.e absolute appalling. Not borderline rude. Just rude. Impatient and unfriendly. Don’t wanna deal with live interactive humans? Become a grave digger. P.s nice decor

Regularly attend the Thursday pub quiz and Great Expectations is a great environment with several side rooms that make for an intimate feel and an effective public address so everyone can hear the questions. The bar has a good range of drinks and the pub food is pretty good. The only drawback in my experience is that it is situated close to Reading University so on occasions groups of students arrive on mass, which can make it busy and slightly change the atmosphere for the worse in my opinion. Please note that I cannot comment on the rooms as I've never stayed as a hotel guest.

You'll probably say this when you enter the Great Expectations.... I Didn't know this pub was here it's Huge and the Interior is so interesting.... this is what I and many people who I've introduced to this Reading Instuition have said upon setting foot in here .Great Food Amazing staff Good beers on Tap Plenty of Space. And a pool table . And they run a pretty good Quiz on Thursdays too

Not a great hotel. I booked 2 rooms and one was pretty disgusting and the other okay. The floor in the bar was so dirty and sticky you could barely walk on it. The staff were really nice and friendly and the breakfast really good value for money. It is in a great location but it's a bit of a lottery if you get a clean room.

An easily to get to place, away from the madding crowds. Just outside the main high streets, it's a nice pub with a cosy atmosphere. Very friendly staff who go out of their way to help you when needed. Nice menu selection and very good quality food on offer (I recommend their sticky toffee pudding). Little nooks to hide away in if you want something intimate, but able to handle larger groups with social distancing kept in mind. Definitely worth a visit or 5...
