Smart traditional pub with wood panelling, local memorabilia on the walls and a comfort food menu.

Nice clean premises and food was good. Very welcoming staff for both animals and people. Pity the choice of beers wasn't brilliant though. Would certainly go again and also visit the farm shop.

Well....if I'm honest! The room was ok. Large 4 poster bed that was comfortable, obviously an old building and appreciate it's hard for things to be perfect. Our room rate was ÂŁ170 per night. While in the room I checked to see if breakfast was included in this price but it wasn't, I then noticed that the room rate for next week was ÂŁ140 and April was ÂŁ100. I think the value for money is there for ÂŁ100 but definitely not for ÂŁ170 so do feel I've been hugely over charged. I did want to make coffee in the room with the advertised Nespresso machine but there were no coffee pods!In an effort to see if we could get breakfast we were told by the cleaner that breakfast could be purchased in the attached farm shop. We ordered, 2x scrambled eggs on toast (arrived to the table cold) 1x eggs Benedict (smallest muffin in the world, cold poached eggs and cold sliced ham), 1x egg and sausage baguette (didn't arrive at all until we asked where it was and then it came with undercooked eggs)! My son and his new wife (that day!) Stayed in the room next door. He payed when booking and then got charged again when his best man checked him in! He did get a refund! It's a shame I had to be negative as the property itself offers much more than most places in the area.I'd be very happy if my son and myself had only paid ÂŁ100 each as this is what I think would have been the right price.

Went for Sunday lunch 19/03/22......easily the worst Sunday roast I've been served..... Beef was an oily pile of fat..... The pork was absolutely swimming in oil.... Push your fork on it and oil came pouring out of it..... Hard poorly cooked potatoes that seemed days old.... I was able to eat the chicken and Yorkshire pudding.... Very disappointed and I wouldn't even feed that meat to my dog..... Black horse sort your act out.....

Fantastic staff first of all! The room was magnificent. I think we'll above average for this type of establishment. The bathroom was lovely too. The food downstairs was excellent too. Well within my budget.

Our server, Lois, was outstanding. Great location, within easy reach of Pinewood studios. Next time we visit we will pre-book the very romantic and cosy looking outdoor pods with outside heating, fairy lights and table service. What more could anyone want?

Unfortunately cannot comment on the food. Cannot even comment on the drink.Having booked one of the outside pods for a birthday gathering, and having waited for an hour without even getting served a drink, we decided to leave as clearly we had become invisible to staff.A shame really as we had been looking forward to a nice meal to celebrate a birthday, and instead we ended up leaving hungry, thirsty, and with a very, very negative opinion of their approach to customer service.Had to give 1 star, as 0 stars not an option !EDITHaving just read other users recent posts, clearly not a one off. Perhaps should have been less polite in my assessment of this place - avoid, avoid, avoid.....

Ended up having to make an unexpected stop for dinner and was pleasantly surprised by the food. Amazing home cooked chips, grilled chicken and beef salad. The premises are lovely, and ample parking on offer. The farm shop on premises was a nice fresh change from the usual dreary shopping markets. A decent selection of local produce for sale. Bought some potatoes.

We booked a Saturday lunch time inside table to celebrate a family member’s birthday. We were a table of 6, including 2 children. When we saw how intimate the inside space was we decided we would see if we could sit in one of the outside pods so we wouldn’t disturb other diners. We were told the pod would be an additional £60 but decided it would make the occasion a bit more special and mean we could relax with the kids and also watch them in the play area. We also thought the additional spend would provide a better level of service…unfortunately this was not the case at all. We were repeatedly left and had to go up to the bar and order or ask to order. We were brought wine with no glasses, sharing platters with no plates whilst drinks orders took exceptionally long to arrive and we had to go and ask repeatedly if they were coming. I did mention this all to our server who was apologetic and the service did improve thereafter but unfortunately still with errors (wine bottle just plonked on the table and not poured, etc). This was really surprising given the additional spend for a pod. The food however, was good on the whole. My chicken burger was lovely but steaks were over cooked (medium to well done vs medium rare as requested) though still tasty as we’re the sides (broccoli, mac & cheese). Staff really need to look at their service. They weren’t busy at all (12pm booking so early) and we could see staff standing around chatting despite us trying to get their attention. We were told about a light to attract service in the pod but this couldn’t be seen from the bar area so unless staff came past they couldn’t see it. Also no offer to reduce the bill to compensate. Very disappointing as we’d been looking forward to coming for a while, love the village and the farm shop and had chosen the Black Horse for a special occasion.

A very odd experience. Waited over 45 minutes just for drinks and then had 6 staff members bring over a drink each. Food took around 1hour 40 to come out, - 6 roast dinners. Staff are very young with what's seems like 0 training or common sense.I think with a few properly trained staff this place could be really good.

This pub has become a disappointment. We used to love coming here but now I’d like to say maybe they have got too big for there boots. We had a table booked for 1pm, ordered our food at 2pm after a few drinks and our food didn’t arrive until 5pm. There was a lot of us, however I booked very far in advance and if they’d wanted pre orders to help with the service then they should of asked. There is no way they were understaffed as the staff members were constantly huddled together chatting near the bar outside. When the food did arrive it wasn’t anything to shout about. The prices are astronomical which normally you don’t mind paying if your provided with fantastic service and great food. We asked for ice cream for the children which arrived in dribs and drabs with no spoons so we constantly had to keep asking for things. We organised this lunch with friends who travelled quite a long way to get there and it was embarrassing as we’d suggested this pub. Luckily we had a nice time in general as we hadn’t seen each other in so long but the whole experience was a huge disappointment. Either lower your prices so that expectations are met or up your game and provide the service and quality of food people are paying for.
